Movement One Synthesis: From Arise to Clean Over

The Book of Joshua

Meta-Physical Interpretation

Joshua opens the next great movement.

The Torah brings the initiate from Conception, through Birth, Growth and Development, into Maturity:

Genesis: Conception
Exodus: Birth / (New Birth)
Leviticus: Growth
Numbers: Development
Deuteronomy: Maturity

Joshua begins when the mature consciousness must now possess the Promised Land.

The Promised Land is the Body-Temple. Israel represents the highest ideals awakened within consciousness. The nations occupying Canaan represent established thoughts, emotions, appetites, memories and behavioural patterns already controlling different regions of the organism.

Moses can lead the initiate to the boundary because Moses represents understanding of Divine Law. Yet understanding Law does not automatically establish Law throughout the whole consciousness. Joshua represents the courage, faith and disciplined action required to carry that understanding into every part of life.

Joshua therefore marks the transition from:

Knowing the Law to embodying the Law.
Receiving instruction to exercising dominion.
Wandering between opposing thoughts to establishing spiritual government.
Seeing the Promised Land to consciously possessing it.

The battles of Joshua are inner battles. They describe the displacement of entrenched patterns that have occupied the Body-Temple for generations. The instruction to destroy the inhabitants completely signifies that inherited error cannot remain hidden, protected or allowed to rebuild itself beneath a new spiritual identity.

Jericho represents the first great fortified thought structure encountered when the initiate crosses into conscious possession, predominantly this is the materialised intellect. Its walls are sustained by repeated materialistic beliefs, collective agreement and long-established emotional reactions. Israel does not overcome Jericho through ordinary intellectual strategy. The walls fall through obedience, ordered movement, silence, sound and the completion of a divinely directed cycle.

Achan reveals that concealed attachment to the old consciousness weakens the whole inner nation. Ai demonstrates that spiritual confidence without self-examination leads to defeat. The sun standing still reveals consciousness holding unwavering illumination until the work is completed. The division of the land shows every faculty, power and function receiving its rightful place within the ReGenerated organism.

Joshua is therefore the Book of spiritual possession.

It asks:

Can the initiate establish Divine Law within the land already promised?

Can every tribe / mental faculty take responsibility for its appointed inheritance?

Can consciousness remove the old rulers without becoming another form of tyranny?

Can the mature initiate govern the Body-Temple from the living centre of I AM?

The central declaration of Joshua is therefore a deeply profound statement:

“As for me and my house, we will serve Jehovah”.

“Me” is the governing consciousness. “My house” is the complete organism, including thought, feeling, word, appetite, memory, imagination and action. Joshua declares that every faculty within the Body-Temple shall now serve the EVER-LIVING. The motive for life becomes ReGeneration. Everything one does will revolve around this central idea of the indwelling EVER-LIVING as the one and only guiding light for our lives.

This means we listen to those the EVER-LIVING connects us with to further our ReGeneration and withdraw from those who intend harm.

So, the Book of Joshua begins the practical occupation of ReGenerated consciousness.

Eight Movements of Joshua

Movement One: Crossing into the Promised Land

Joshua 1–3

Moses dies, Joshua assumes leadership, the people prepare themselves, the spies enter Jericho, Rahab protects them and Israel crosses the Jordan on dry ground.

This movement marks the transition from understanding Divine Law to actively embodying it. Moses has brought consciousness to maturity. Joshua now carries that maturity into the Promised Land, the Body-Temple.

The Jordan represents a decisive boundary in consciousness. Crossing it means the initiate can no longer remain safely outside the work, studying, preparing or postponing. The feet of the priests enter the water before the way opens, showing that living faith expressed through understanding (the feet) precedes visible confirmation.

The Divine Law is always at work; faith in action is the seed, and the unfolding events are the harvest. So, sowing and reaping is an ongoing process. Today we reaped the behaviour sown by our thought-word-deeds of the past and as we 'eat' that fruit we sow the seeds it contains, or change them and sow new seeds. This is the ongoing process of ReGeneration and the unfolding of our Soul nature.

Movement Two: Consecration and the Fall of Jericho

Joshua 4–6

The twelve stones establish a permanent inner memorial. These are significant pointers towards further unfoldment as the Twelve Faculties of the Mind. The lessons gained through the wilderness are to become part of the organism’s living memory. In the Torah, the twelve tribes are the precursors for the future development of these faculties, which are fully developed in the New Testament. You will learn more about them in The Mysteries of the Book of Numbers.

Israel is circumcised at Gilgal, keeps the Passover, the manna ceases, Joshua encounters the captain of Jehovah’s host and Jericho falls.

Before possessing the land, the mature initiate undergoes renewed consecration. Gilgal represents the rolling away of the reproach of the former consciousness. The manna ceases because the initiate must now live from the fruit of the land. What was once supplied during dependence must now arise through conscious cultivation.

Jericho is the first fortified structure of inherited thought. Its walls represent beliefs sustained by repetition, fear, agreement and long occupation.

The walls fall through ordered movement, disciplined silence and rightly directed sound; the WORD. This represents the fall of the material bind on the intellect and its rigid structures which hinder ReGeneration and its subsequent illumination.

It is consciousness moving in harmony with Divine Instruction until the old structure can no longer support itself. The hypnosis of the intellect cannot be sustained after the Light of Truth has been received and voiced.

Rahab represents receptive faith already present within the occupied consciousness. She recognises the movement of the EVER-LIVING before the rulers of Jericho do, and therefore survives the collapse of the old order.

Movement Three: Concealed Desire, Defeat and Restoration

Joshua 7–8

Achan takes what was devoted, Israel is defeated at Ai, the hidden cause is exposed, Ai is overcome and the Law is read at Mount Ebal and Mount Gerizim.

Achan reveals that the whole inner nation is affected when one part of consciousness secretly preserves what Divine Law has marked for removal.

Ai appears smaller than Jericho, yet Israel fails because confidence has replaced inward examination. The lesson is precise: no pattern is insignificant when concealed desire gives it continued life.

Once the hidden attachment is identified and removed, through denial, the initiate returns to the place of defeat and acts with wisdom rather than presumption.

The reading of blessings and curses restores the centrality of Law. Victory does not grant the initiate freedom from Divine boundaries. True possession depends upon remaining aligned with them.

Movement Four: Deception, Discernment and the Long Day

Joshua 9–10

The Gibeonites deceive Israel, five kings attack Gibeon, Joshua intervenes and the sun stands still until the battle is completed.

The Gibeonites represent thoughts that appear old, distant and harmless while actually belonging to the present occupied land. Israel judges by appearances and fails to ask counsel of Jehovah.

This reveals a subtler stage of spiritual development. Open opposition is easier to recognise than error disguised as humility, weakness or harmlessness. Many of our faults while not 'of the tribe' feel safe enough to live with, yet will hinder ReGeneration when we are tired, anxious, afraid, etc.

Joshua honours the covenant made through inadequate discernment, showing that the initiate must accept responsibility for words already spoken.

The sun standing still represents consciousness holding illumination without interruption until the work is completed. The initiate does not allow darkness, uncertainty or fatigue to end the work prematurely.

The five kings represent organised ruling tendencies brought out from concealment and placed beneath the feet, where they can no longer govern consciousness from above.

Movement Five: Breaking the Confederated Powers

Joshua 11–12

The northern kings unite against Israel, Joshua defeats them and the conquered kings are listed.

As possession expands, isolated forms of resistance organise themselves into confederations. Entrenched patterns that once appeared separate reveal their common interest in preserving the old government.

The waters of Merom signify the gathering place of these collective forces. Joshua acts decisively before they can establish a stronger inner alliance.

The list of defeated kings records the progressive removal of existing degenerate ideas ruling in consciousness. They lived in us, through us, as us, yet are not us. With focus on the presence, we dethrone these false kings and dissolve the centres of authority that formerly controlled regions of thought, emotion and bodily expression. This is a record of 'overcoming'.

This overcoming is a process of due diligence, where we monitor the character of these deep-seated feelings and the thoughts they produce and refuse to speak them, replacing them with thoughts and Words of Wisdom, Kindness and Love. These Words are then magnified by the Divine Law and we are liberated.

This movement completes the major campaigns, though the land is not yet fully possessed.

Movement Six: Dividing the Inheritance

Joshua 13–19

The land is apportioned among the tribes. Caleb receives Hebron, Judah and Joseph receive their territories, the remaining tribes are surveyed and Joshua receives his own inheritance.

Conquest alone does not establish order. Every faculty must receive its proper field of responsibility.

The tribal inheritances represent distinct powers and functions within the ReGenerated organism. Each receives boundaries, cities, resources and work appropriate to its nature.

Caleb receives Hebron because faithful strength retains its vitality across the whole wilderness journey. He asks for the mountain where the giants remain, revealing that mature faith does not seek the easiest inheritance. It seeks the responsibility it has been prepared to fulfil.

The survey of the remaining land shows that some faculties hesitate to occupy what has already been granted. Joshua therefore requires conscious examination, definition and distribution.

Joshua receives his inheritance after the tribes, demonstrating that true spiritual leadership does not seize the first or largest portion for itself.

Movement Seven: Refuge, Responsibility and Inner Unity

Joshua 20–22

The cities of refuge are appointed, the Levites receive their cities and the eastern tribes return across the Jordan. An altar nearly causes war before its purpose is explained.

The cities of refuge reveal the distinction between deliberate destruction and unintended injury. Divine Law protects consciousness from impulsive vengeance while truth is being established.

The Levites receive no single territorial inheritance because the spiritual function must remain distributed throughout the whole land. Every part of the organism requires access to instruction, worship and remembrance.

The eastern tribes build an altar that the western tribes interpret as rebellion. This nearly divides Israel from within after the outer enemies have been subdued.

The event reveals the danger of judging symbols without first hearing motive. The altar was built as a witness of unity, yet appeared to be evidence of separation.

Possessing the land therefore requires more than defeating opposition. The inner nation must learn to communicate, examine motives and preserve unity without ignoring possible disorder.

Movement Eight: Covenant, Choice and the Completed Life of Joshua

Joshua 23–24

Joshua gives his final instructions, recounts the journey from Abraham onward, renews the covenant at Shechem and declares:

“As for me and my house, we will serve Jehovah”.

Joshua’s final work is to return the people to conscious choice. The land may have been entered, battles won and inheritances distributed, yet continued possession depends upon whom consciousness serves.

Shechem represents the place where responsibility is consciously shouldered. Joshua recounts the whole journey so that Israel recognises that the land was not gained through independent human strength.

The foreign gods still carried within consciousness must be put away. The final danger is therefore internal. Old loyalties can remain beneath a new outward order.

“My house” signifies the complete inner household: thought, feeling, imagination, memory, appetite, speech and action. Joshua’s declaration establishes one governing centre throughout the Body-Temple.

Joshua dies, yet the bones of Joseph are buried in the land. The vision carried from Egypt has reached embodiment. What was promised, preserved and carried through generations is finally planted within the Promised Land.

The Whole Joshua Arc

The eight movements follow this developmental progression:

  1. Entering the Land

  2. Breaking the First Stronghold

  3. Exposing Concealed Attachment

  4. Developing Discernment

  5. Dethroning Organised Resistance

  6. Establishing Rightful Inheritance

  7. Preserving Justice and Unity

  8. Choosing Whom the Whole House Serves

The Book begins with:

“Moses my servant is dead”.

It ends with Joshua’s burial in his inheritance.

Between those two events, Divine Law passes from instruction into occupation. Joshua is the record of mature consciousness taking responsibility for every region of the Promised Land and establishing the government of the EVER-LIVING throughout the Body-Temple.

The Bridge Between Deuteronomy and Joshua

From Maturity to Possession

Deuteronomy ends at the threshold of the Promised Land.

The wilderness journey has completed its work. The experiences of Israel have been remembered, interpreted and gathered into Wisdom. The Law has been rehearsed. The covenant has been renewed. Blessing and curse have been explained as the lawful fruits of alignment and separation. Alignment is the right seed, and being out of alignment is the 'enemy's' seed.

Life and death have been placed before the initiate, and the conscious choice of Life has been commanded.

Moses has written the Law. He has written the Song and placed it in the mouth of the people as a continuing witness. He has blessed the tribes and ascended the mountain to see the land. His eyes remain clear and his natural force remains strong, yet his office has reached completion.

Deuteronomy closes with these words:

“And Joshua the son of Nun was full of the spirit of wisdom; for Moses had laid his hands upon him: and the children of Israel hearkened unto him, and did as the EVER-LIVING commanded Moses.”

Joshua then opens:

“Now it came to pass after the death of Moses the servant of the EVER-LIVING, that the EVER-LIVING spake unto Joshua the son of Nun, Moses’ minister, saying, Moses my servant is dead; now therefore arise, go over this Jordan, thou, and all this people, unto the land which I do give to them, even to the children of Israel.”

There is no break in the inner journey. Deuteronomy ends with Joshua filled with the spirit of Wisdom, and Joshua begins with the command to arise.

Moses means “drawn out”, “taken from the water”. He represents illumined understanding drawn out from the waters of sense consciousness and trained to hear, receive and communicate Divine Law.

Through Moses, the initiate has learned the pattern of Life. The Law has identified the boundaries within which Life flourishes. It has taught the faculties how to think, speak, eat, work, worship, judge, remember, give, receive and live together under the government of the EVER-LIVING.

Moses can reveal the Law, explain the journey, and show the land. Yet understanding the Law and living the Law are two different stages of the inner journey.

The initiate may understand the need to remove fear, greed, appetite, resentment, inherited limitation and false authority from consciousness. She/he may see clearly how these thoughts have established disorder within the Body-Temple. Yet seeing the condition and removing its rulership require a further movement.

Joshua represents this further movement.

Joshua means “Jehovah is salvation”, “the EVER-LIVING saves”, or “the EVER-LIVING delivers”. Joshua represents the active saving principle within the initiate. He carries the Law from understanding into action, from the spoken Word into embodiment, and from maturity into possession.

Nun means “fish”, “sprout” and “perpetuity”. Fish points to Life moving within the waters and hidden depths of our being. A sprout is new growth rising from a living seed. Perpetuity reveals continuity, the unbroken movement of Life.

Joshua the son of Nun therefore represents the saving principle rising from the hidden depths of Life, bringing forth new growth and continuing the work of the EVER-LIVING.

The meanings of Moses, Joshua and Nun combine to reveal the bridge.

Understanding has been drawn out of the waters. It has received the Law and brought the initiate to maturity. From those same depths, the saving principle now rises as new growth, filled with Wisdom and prepared to continue the work.

The Metaphysical Bible Dictionary gives us the individual meanings. When the meanings are placed back into their relationship within the story, their message, their Wisdom becomes visible.

Moses lays his hands upon Joshua.

Hands represent action, executive power, service, authority and the ability to bring thought into visible expression. Moses laying his hands upon Joshua signifies the transmission of illumined understanding into wise action. The Law passes into the saving faculty that will apply it throughout the land.

Joshua accepted and received Moses, just as action requires understanding of the Law.

Embodiment requires instruction. The new stage grows from the completed work of the former stage. Joshua carries Moses within him as the Law which has become Wisdom.

This is why Joshua is commanded:

“This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth, but thou shalt meditate thereon day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein.”

The Law must remain in the mouth because the spoken Word directs consciousness. It must be meditated upon day and night because every conscious and subconscious region must become saturated with its precepts. It must be observed and done because Joshua represents the stage where understanding becomes living conduct.

Deuteronomy is Maturity.

Joshua is Possession.

Maturity gathers experience into Wisdom. Possession applies that Wisdom throughout the whole field of life.

The Promised Land is the Body. During the wilderness journey, the initiate prepares to enter the Body consciously. The Body has always been present, just as Canaan existed throughout the journey, yet its regions remain occupied by established rulers.

These rulers are the accumulated thoughts, fears, appetites, emotional reactions, habits, memories and inherited beliefs of the carnal mind. They have built cities, formed alliances, established boundaries and governed the land as though their authority were permanent.

The carnal mind sets itself up as authority within the Promised Land. It rules through fear, violence, greed, oppression, regulation and rules posing as Law. It preserves its position by resisting every new idea that might expose its ignorance and remove it from the throne. Yet, the carnal mind is the sleep of death.

Moses reveals the Divine Law by which these false rulers are recognised and Joshua applies the Law until their authority ends.

The battles of Joshua describe the overthrow of carnal rulership within the individual. Every king represents a ruling thought. Every city represents an organised state of consciousness. Every nation represents a family of related tendencies. Every alliance reveals different forms of error cooperating to preserve their shared control.

The removal of these inhabitants represents the ending of their capacity to reproduce themselves within consciousness.

Healing means no more carnal rulership. The clarity of Spiritual Life is to be restored to every individual. Individual peace arises when thought, motive, word and action live in alignment with Divine Law.

Jordan forms the boundary between these two stages.

Jordan means “the descender”, or “that which descends”. It represents the stream of Life descending into manifestation. To stand beyond Jordan is to stand at the edge of embodiment. To cross Jordan is to allow Divine understanding to descend into thought, feeling, nerve, blood, organ, faculty, conduct and daily life.

Moses brings the initiate to Jordan, and Joshua takes the initiate through Jordan.

Deuteronomy teaches the initiate what must govern the Body-Temple. Joshua begins the actual establishment of that government.

The death of Moses reveals the completion of visible instruction. The EVER-LIVING buries Moses, and no person knows his sepulchre. Means the Law passes into the hidden depths of consciousness, beyond personality, ownership and manipulation.

The initiate may honour the teacher, yet must never build a shrine where movement is required. Mourning has its appointed time. Israel mourns Moses for thirty days, and then the days of mourning end. Consciousness must release the visible form so the living principle may continue its work.

Moses has become inward. Joshua must now arise.

This command, “Arise”, is the first great word of the Book of Joshua.

The initiate has remembered long enough, been instructed, and has rehearsed the Law long enough. Now, the initiate must stand, cross the river and possess the land.

Deuteronomy describes the maturing of Joshua’s inner journey. The Law is spoken, remembered and engraved into the heart and mind so the saving principle can act from it.

Joshua describes that saving principle entering the Body-Temple and confronting every form of self-perpetuating carnal government already established there.

The Gospel reveals the same Joshua principle matured as Jesus.

Joshua is the saving principle entering the land and overcoming its false rulers. Jesus is Joshua matured, centred in the indwelling God and living the Law as Life.

Jehovah is God still perceived as separate by the immature mind. Christ is YHWH recognised as the animating principle within, consciously lived and expressed through the ReGenerated Hu-man be-ing.

The movement is therefore complete:

Moses receives and reveals the Law.

Deuteronomy engraves the Law into heart and mind.

Joshua applies the Law throughout the Promised Land.

Jesus reveals the Joshua principle matured.

Christ is the EVER-LIVING consciously recognised and lived from within.

Deuteronomy closes in readiness. Joshua opens in action.

The Law has been heard.

The Song has been placed in the mouth.

The choice of Life has been made clear.

Moses has completed his office.

Joshua is filled with the spirit of Wisdom.

The children of Israel now hearken to him.

The Body-Temple lies before them.

The command of the EVER-LIVING is:

“Now therefore arise, go over this Jordan.”

MOVEMENT ONE

ARISE AND CROSS OVER

Joshua 1–3

The saving faculty rises, gathers the inner nation under one command, examines the first stronghold and carries the whole consciousness through the descending life stream into embodied responsibility.

MOVEMENT INTRODUCTION

From Maturity to Possession

Deuteronomy ends with Moses upon the threshold of the Promised Land. The whole wilderness journey has been remembered. The Law has been rehearsed. The covenant has been renewed. Life and death have been set before the initiate. Moses has blessed the tribes and placed his hands upon Joshua. Understanding has completed the work of preparation and has transferred its Wisdom to the faculty that must act.

Joshua opens with no interval for uncertainty. The first command is: “Arise.” The Law has already been heard. The land has already been seen. The promise has already been given. What remains is embodiment. Truth must move from the abstract mind into nerve, blood, organ, appetite, feeling, speech, movement and conduct. The Body-Temple must become the lived field of Divine government. ReGeneration is total renewal resulting in the resurrection of the body out of the sleep of death, into the light of life.

The whole individual is to be raised from the dead.

Moses means: ‘drawn out’, ‘taken from the water’. Moses represents understanding drawn out from the waters of sense consciousness and trained to recognise Divine Law beneath appearances. Through Moses, the initiate learns why conditions arise, how motives bear fruit, how the faculties are ordered and how the whole life may be brought into covenant with the EVER-LIVING.

Joshua means: ‘Jehovah is salvation’, ‘Jah is saviour’, ‘Jehovah is deliverer’, ‘whom Jehovah makes triumphant’, ‘Jehovah is the victory’, ‘Jah makes rich’. Joshua represents the saving and executive I AM. He carries the Law received through Moses into action, the Law is not a man-made invention. Men cannot make Laws.

This means for the initiate that understanding becomes direction, direction becomes movement and movement becomes possession.

Nun means: ‘spreading abroad’, ‘becoming extended’, ‘prolific’, ‘continuous’, ‘posterity’, ‘eternal increase’, ‘interpenetrating all’, ‘fish’. Joshua the son of Nun is saving action born from the continuous Life moving within the depths. The fish belongs to the waters and moves within a realm hidden from normal view. Nun therefore shows the unseen continuity of Life from which the Joshua faculty rises.

Life is an omnipresent principle. In Life there is no death. The death of Moses describes the completion of an office. The law-bearing faculty becomes inwardly present in Joshua as the Book of the Law that must remain in his mouth and be meditated upon day and night.

A teacher’s outward voice becomes an inward principle living within the individual who has a receptive mind. The initiate no longer waits for instruction to arrive from outside. The Divine Law has entered consciousness and is now the first, last and only authority to rightfully govern action.

The Promised Land is the Body-Temple. This remains the central key of Joshua. The Body is promised because it belongs to the EVER-LIVING. Every cell, organ, faculty and current derives from Life. Yet established thoughts already occupy the land. Fear, appetite, inherited reaction, pride, old memory, self-protection and material value have formed cities, walls, kings and alliances. Possession requires the ending of their occupation and their parasitical ability to reproduce themselves.

No one is to blame here. The process of materialisation has been ongoing in response to material living. Yet, as soon as one outgrows materialistic thinking and is aware of the reality of Spirit and the Law, this is to be the choice. This is, in Moses' words "Choosing life".

EVER-LIVING is the true authority and anything standing in the way is to be eliminated. Again, this is an inner process. Joshua teaches the inner process, while the New Testament's central figure Jesus demonstrates the character produced when one overcomes the degenerate behaviour within.

Joshua is inner, Jesus is outer. Same character.

Joshua therefore records an inward campaign. Kings represent ruling thoughts. Cities represent organised states of consciousness. Walls represent boundaries and defensive systems. Nations represent families of related tendencies. Rivers represent currents of life and thought. Mountains represent elevated states. Valleys represent lower or receptive regions. Inheritance means a faculty receiving responsibility for a defined field of embodied life.

Pause right here. Make sure you are still reading audibly, pronouncing each word carefully and taking your time and thinking more than you read. ReGeneration is an ongoing process, there’s no hurry, and everyone who is of God and realizes it, will help, rather than hinder you. This is no longer the ‘human race’. There’s no ‘us and them’ in the Kingdom of God now emerging through each of us.

Back to the storyline.

Jordan means: ‘the descender’, ‘the descending one’, ‘flowing down abundantly’, ‘dispenser from above’, ‘river of judgment’. Jordan is the stream through which thought descends into expression and consequence. To cross Jordan is to meet what thought has already set in motion and to allow Divine understanding to descend into the organism. The initiate passes from knowing Truth to living under its judgment, guidance and protection.

Movement One contains no battle. Before Jericho can fall, the leader must receive the commission, the people must prepare, the faculties with early possession must accept responsibility for the whole, the inner condition of Jericho must be examined, receptive faith must be identified inside the old structure, and the Ark must enter the river. Right action is the fruit of right order.

The Ark of the Covenant represents the realised Presence of the EVER-LIVING and the living centre of Divine Law within the initiate. The Ark goes before the people because personal will cannot lead the crossing. The priests bear it because consecrated discernment and faith carry the consciousness of Presence into the flood of mortal thought. The people follow because every faculty must learn its direction from the spiritual centre.

The first movement therefore establishes the principle of possession: the land is entered by the Presence, through ordered faculties, under the Law, with the whole inner nation participating. No single faculty crosses alone. No private comfort excuses a tribe from the common work. No outer report can overrule the promise. No flood can prevent passage when the Ark stands in its midst.

Deuteronomy is Maturity. Joshua is Possession. Maturity gathers experience into Wisdom. Possession establishes that Wisdom as the government of the whole embodied life. The command now moves through every level of consciousness: Arise. Prepare. Sanctify. Follow the Ark. Place the feet in the water. Cross over.

CHAPTER ONE

JOSHUA COMMISSIONED AND THE PEOPLE PREPARED

Joshua 1

Chapter One transfers the government of the inner journey from instruction to executive action. The saving I AM receives the Law, the borders of the work, the command to courage, the discipline of the spoken Word and the responsibility to bring every faculty into inheritance.

Part One: Moses’ Office Completed and Joshua Commanded to Arise

Joshua 1:1–5

1. Scripture Text

1 Now it came to pass after the death of Moses the servant of the EVER-LIVING, that the EVER-LIVING spake unto Joshua the son of Nun, Moses’ minister, saying,

2 Moses my servant is dead; now therefore arise, go over this Jordan, thou, and all this people, unto the land which I do give to them, even to the children of Israel.

3 Every place that the sole of your foot shall tread upon, to you have I given it, as I spake unto Moses.

4 From the wilderness, and this Lebanon, even unto the great river, the river Euphrates, all the land of the Hittites, and unto the great sea toward the going down of the sun, shall be your border.

5 There shall not any man be able to stand before thee all the days of thy life: as I was with Moses, so I will be with thee; I will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.

2. Meta-Physical Interpretation

The Book opens after the death of Moses. The transition begins with finality. A completed stage may remain honoured without remaining in office. The initiate must recognise when understanding has done its preparatory work and when continued explanation would delay embodiment.

Moses means: ‘drawn out’, ‘taken from the water’. He represents illumined understanding drawn out from sense consciousness, that is the fruit of the initiate’s experiences drawn from teachings and life. Moses has led Israel from Egypt, received the Law, formed the covenant, ordered the wilderness journey and brought the people to the eastern side of Jordan. He can see the land and describe its meaning. Joshua must enter it.

The Scripture calls Moses “the servant of the EVER-LIVING”. Service has completed his office. Understanding serves Life by revealing order. Once that order has been received, understanding must cease trying to remain the visible leader. It enters the successor as Wisdom. The Law no longer stands only on tablets or in the speech of Moses. It must become the inner constitution of Joshua.

The name places the source of victory in Jehovah, the EVER-LIVING. Joshua succeeds through oneness with Divine purpose, never through a separate personal power.

Nun means: ‘spreading abroad’, ‘becoming extended’, ‘prolific’, ‘continuous’, ‘posterity’, ‘eternal increase’, ‘interpenetrating all’, ‘fish’. Joshua is born from this continuous current. The executive I AM draws its strength from Life interpenetrating the whole being. The visible leader arises from an invisible continuity.

Joshua was Moses’ minister. A minister serves, attends and learns through proximity. The saving faculty has grown beside understanding. It has heard the Law repeatedly, observed the consequences of obedience and rebellion, entered the land as one of the faithful spies, and remained steadfast while the old generation of thought exhausted itself. Executive power becomes trustworthy through long service to Wisdom.

The EVER-LIVING says: “Now therefore arise.” The word “now” closes the interval between recognition and action. Many truths remain unembodied because the intellect continues discussing them after their meaning has become clear. Joshua begins when the individual accepts that the appointed moment for living has arrived.

To arise is to lift consciousness from passivity, grief, dependence and delay. Moses’ office has ended, yet the promise has not ended. The initiate must not use the passing of a former support as justification for inactivity. The same Presence that worked through Moses now speaks within Joshua.

The command includes “thou, and all this people.” The executive I AM does not cross privately. Israel means: ‘he who strives with God’, ‘a prince with God’, ‘one who prevails with God’. Israel represents the gathered inner nation, the faculties and thoughts seeking to live under Divine government. Possession includes the whole consciousness.

Jordan means: ‘the descender’, ‘the descending one’, ‘flowing down abundantly’, ‘dispenser from above’, ‘river of judgment’. The river marks the threshold where ideas descend into embodied consequence. Moses has brought the initiate to the judgment of Life. Joshua must lead the faculties through that current so Divine Law becomes visible in the Body-Temple.

The land is given to the children of Israel. God’s children are the phases of Spiritual evolution brought forth within us. They are the higher ideals, ideas, faculties and capacities generated through the journey from conception to Maturity. The land belongs to them because every function of the Body-Temple belongs under the government of Life.

“Every place that the sole of your foot shall tread upon” reveals the method of possession. The foot represents understanding made practical, direction accepted and contact established. A truth becomes ours where we stand upon it and walk by it. Intellectual admiration does not occupy territory. The sole must touch the ground.

The gift precedes the tread, yet the tread actualises the gift. The EVER-LIVING says, “to you have I given it”, while also requiring Joshua to go over and place his feet upon it. Divine possibility already exists. Conscious participation brings the promise into lived expression. Actions manifest what understanding has established.

The borders name the breadth of the work. The wilderness represents the dry field of thought where dependence upon God has been learned. Lebanon means: ‘white’, ‘clean’, ‘pure’, ‘brilliant’, ‘snowy’. It represents the high region of purification and spiritual clarity. Euphrates means: ‘fruitfulness’, ‘that which makes fruitful’, ‘the great river’. It represents the abundant life-current through which Divine ideas multiply in expression.

The land of the Hittites is included. Hittites means: ‘fear’, ‘terror’, ‘broken or dismayed thoughts’. Fear already occupies regions of the Body-Temple through nervous reaction, memory, contraction and inherited expectation. The promise includes this territory. Fear may be deeply established, yet it has no permanent title to the land. In reality, fear is a void between consciousness of the EVER-LIVING and oneself into which objective fears are poured.

The great sea toward the going down of the sun marks the outer limit of sense consciousness, the region where light appears to descend beyond sight. The border extends from the dry wilderness through purity and fruitfulness, across fear-bound territory, to the farthest reach of outer experience. No part of embodied life remains outside the work.

The EVER-LIVING promises that no man shall stand before Joshua all the days of his life. A man in this context represents an organised state claiming authority. The promise concerns government. No ruling thought can retain final authority before the saving I AM when Joshua remains aligned with the Law.

This last point explains why the early adepts refused to submit to the ruler or governor of the land, simply because it is suicide. The order the ruler of the land seeks to impose can never be imposed; it emerges from deep within consciousness as the initiate matures into Soul consciousness.

“As I was with Moses, so I will be with thee.” Divine Presence continues while offices change. The initiate may outgrow a form, teacher, method or stage without losing God. Continuity lies in the EVER-LIVING, not in the outer instrument through which guidance previously came.

“I will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.” The saving work proceeds from the Life that interpenetrates all. The individual may feel the absence of former supports, yet the Source remains present. Joshua’s first foundation is therefore neither conquest nor strategy. It is the unbroken companionship of the EVER-LIVING.

3. What the Initiate Learns from this Lesson

• To recognise when an office has completed its work. Understanding remains sacred, yet it must yield the visible leadership to embodied action.

• That the same EVER-LIVING works through evolving faculties. Divine continuity remains while methods and stages change.

• That Joshua is the saving and executive I AM, born from the continuous Life represented by Nun.

• That the Promised Land is the Body-Temple. Every region of embodied life belongs under Divine government.

• That the promise becomes possession where the sole of the foot actually treads. Truth must become conduct. We must walk our talk, that is live life according to our highest understanding at any given time.

• That the whole inner nation must cross. No faculty may remain outside the ReGenerative process.

• That fear-bound territory forms part of the inheritance. Fear has occupied the land, yet fear does not own it. Neither can it, ever.

• That the Presence does not fail or forsake the saving faculty. The Source remains constant through every transition. Our awareness of the Presence must evolve continually.

The office of understanding is complete.
The Law lives within Joshua.
The land is given.
The command is now: Arise.

Part Two: Strength, Courage and the Law in the Mouth

Joshua 1:6–9

1. Scripture Text

6 Be strong and of good courage; for thou shalt cause this people to inherit the land which I sware unto their fathers to give them.

7 Only be strong and very courageous, to observe to do according to all the law, which Moses my servant commanded thee: turn not from it to the right hand or to the left, that thou mayest have good success whithersoever thou goest.

8 This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth, but thou shalt meditate thereon day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.

9 Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of good courage; be not affrighted, neither be thou dismayed: for the EVER-LIVING thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.

2. Meta-Physical Interpretation

Throughout the Hexateuch, you'll have noticed that the same principles are reiterated in a number of different ways. This is because passage is building on passage and understanding on understanding and repetition and approximate repetition seal the deal; that is the light of the words is woven into the neurons establishing understanding.

The command to strength and courage appears three times in the opening chapter. This repetition establishes a governing rhythm. Joshua must hear the same Truth until strength becomes the atmosphere from which he acts.

Strength is the capacity to remain centred in Principle while the pressures of the Race Thought Atmosphere attempt to immerse consciousness in fear, haste, aggression or retreat. Courage is strength of heart. It brings the whole feeling nature into agreement with what the Higher Mind knows. Joshua needs both firmness and heart because possession requires sustained action through unfamiliar territory.

The EVER-LIVING says that Joshua shall cause the people to inherit the land. He does more than cross personally. The executive I AM must organise conditions through which every faculty receives its rightful field. A leader who enters alone has not fulfilled Joshua’s office. The whole inner nation must become capable of inheritance; there is no division, 'we' is 'one'.

Inheritance differs from temporary access. A visitor may enter a region and leave its ruler unchanged. An inheritor accepts responsibility, cultivates the field, protects its boundaries and transmits its order into the future. Joshua must cause Israel to live in the land as its rightful steward under the EVER-LIVING.

The promise was sworn unto the fathers. The fathers represent originating spiritual ideas and foundational states through which the inner nation was generated. Abraham established faith, Isaac sonship and joy, Jacob the organised faculties, and Joseph the increasing Truth idea descending into the body. Joshua brings their promise into embodied fulfilment.

Verse seven adds “only”. Strength alone can serve personal ambition. Courage alone can become daring without direction. Joshua must be very courageous “to observe to do according to all the law”. The central courage of the Book is the courage to obey Divine Law without allowing excitement, threat, success or resistance to alter the motive.

This is telling us to remain steadfast to the Law, that any appearances that are counter to the Law are the fruit of previous thinking and errors. By remaining steadfast, we pass through the harvest of the old thinking and continue to cultivate the new whose harvest is also guaranteed as we consciously tend the Garden of Consciousness, planting good seeds.

To observe means to watch, guard and keep before consciousness. To do means to express. The Law must be both inwardly guarded and outwardly enacted. Inwardly guarded meaning not influenced by those who do not live in alignment with the Law and outwardly enacted means never being tempted to adopt behaviour, e.g. peer pressure that causes us to sow degenerate seed whose fruit we will need to encounter at a later date.

Everything we've been taught in the Torah-Hexateuch is both Divinely Inspired and completely suitable for practical living.

Observation without action leaves the land occupied by old habits. Action without observation loses direction and can reproduce the force of the old rulers.

Moses remains present as “all the law, which Moses my servant commanded thee”. The visible teacher has completed his office, yet his revelation becomes Joshua’s inward standard. The passage confirms that Joshua fully embraces Moses and embodies Him as the initiate is to embody the Divine Law.

Joshua must not turn to the right hand or to the left. The right hand represents active power, assertion and outward execution. The left hand suggests receptive support and the less conscious side. Turning aside to either extreme breaks the straight line of Divine purpose. Power without Spiritual receptivity becomes force. Receptivity without action is barren land. Joshua must maintain their union under Law.

Good success arises “whithersoever thou goest” when direction remains aligned. Scripture defines success through congruency with Divine Law. It does not define success through possession of objects, public approval or domination of others. The way succeeds because each step carries Life more faithfully and fully into expression.

The Book of the Law must not depart out of Joshua’s mouth. The mouth is the organ through which inwardly accepted thought becomes audible direction. Joshua governs the faculties through the Word. When the Law remains in the mouth, speech ceases serving fear, complaint, blame, exaggeration and divided motive. The initiate's speech becomes bold because they understand that every Word is a seed and they choose the very best seeds and speak them boldly and cultivate them knowing that it is the Law which does the work.

"One man sows, another man reaps, God supplies the increase". Means the initiate participating in the ReGeneration sows the seed Words in daily speech, and after some days, months or years they live the fruit of those words which have changed them. Hence God is the Law that governed the process of growth and maturity where the words bear their harvest.

Meditation joins the mouth to the mind. Joshua must meditate day and night. Day represents illuminated conscious thought. Night represents the hidden, receptive, subconscious field. The Law must enter both. It must guide the thoughts we recognise and the deeper patterns that continue operating when conscious attention has moved elsewhere.

Meditation here leads to observance and action. It does not end in introspection or contemplation. Joshua meditates “that thou mayest observe to do”. The Word enters thought, thought shapes motive, motive directs action, action establishes behaviour patterns, called 'habits', and these occupy the land. This sequence turns Law into character. There’s no such thing as a ‘good’ habit, all habits are temporary and are to be overcome when degenerate and transformed into character when the principle proves itself.

“According to all that is written therein” prevents selective obedience. The lower mind favours principles that confirm its preferences and neglects those that expose cherished motives. Joshua receives the whole Law. Possession requires a complete inner constitution, not a collection of convenient sayings. No ‘cherry picking’ and choosing which teachings to live by and which to ignore.

“Then thou shalt make thy way prosperous.” The EVER-LIVING gives the land, yet Joshua makes his way prosperous through alignment. Divine grace and conscious responsibility work together. God supplies Life, Law and Presence. The executive I AM establishes the way by speaking, meditating and doing in agreement with them.

The Divine Law applies to everyone. It is no respecter of persons. This is essential to understand as alignment with the Law is Life and being out of alignment is death. The command is: Choose Life.

The command “Have not I commanded thee?” removes the authority and influences of mood. Courage does not wait for fear to disappear. The command proceeds from the EVER-LIVING, and Joshua acts because the direction is clear. Feeling then learns to follow the Divine centre.

“Be not affrighted, neither be thou dismayed.” Hittite thought appears here before the Hittites are outwardly confronted. Fright scatters the forces suddenly. Dismay drains their continuity and leaves consciousness broken in pieces. The repeated command gathers the faculties around the Presence.

Remember, good never fights evil in the way that evil fights evil. Evil doers are committing suicide by being hostile, because they flood their blood with poisons, which cause degeneration.

The final ground of courage is: “the EVER-LIVING thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.” Joshua carries no private power into the land. God is the Life within the feet, the courage within the heart, the Wisdom within the Law, the authority within the Word and the Presence within every region to be possessed.

3. What the Initiate Learns from this Lesson

• That strength means remaining centred in Principle, while courage brings the heart into agreement with that centre.

• That Joshua must cause the whole people to inherit; personal progress does not complete the work.

• That inheritance includes stewardship, cultivation and responsibility for the field received.

• To guard and do the whole Law rather than selecting only the parts that suit existing desire.

• The initiate learns not to turn into the extremes of force or passivity. The straight way joins active power with receptive Wisdom.

• That the Law belongs in the mouth, the conscious mind, the subconscious field and practical conduct.

• That prosperity means a way made fruitful through agreement with Divine Order. True prosperity is for all as a hu-man family.

• That courage rests upon the Presence of the EVER-LIVING, rather than upon self-generated confidence. Confidence increases dramatically when one is in alignment with the Law.

Keep the Law in the mouth.
Meditate upon it day and night.
Observe to do.
Be strong and of good courage.

Part Three: Prepare Provision for the Crossing

Joshua 1:10–11

Scripture Text

10 Then Joshua commanded the officers of the people, saying,

11 Pass through the midst of the camp, and command the people, saying, Prepare you victuals; for within three days ye are to pass over this Jordan, to go in to possess the land, which the EVER-LIVING your God giveth you to possess it.

Meta-Physical Interpretation

Joshua receives the command from the EVER-LIVING and immediately communicates it through the officers. The executive I AM becomes an avenue through which Divine direction reaches the organised functions of consciousness. Divine Intelligence is melding with daily consciousness.

The officers represent directing thoughts, administrative capacities and centres of coordination. A great inward purpose must pass into practical organisation. Inspiration alone cannot move the camp. The message must reach the functions that arrange provision, timing, sequence and readiness.

The officers pass through the midst of the camp. The camp represents the faculties gathered in temporary order before permanent possession. Israel has unity, identity and direction, yet it still lives in tents. The camp can move, whereas the land will require stable occupation.

The command goes through the midst because the centre must hear before the circumference acts. Divine order begins within. When the centre receives one clear direction, the many outer functions can prepare without confusion.

“Prepare you victuals.” Victuals represent assimilated nourishment carried into action. The wilderness has taught Israel to receive manna daily. At the threshold of Jordan, the people must consciously prepare what will sustain movement. Training becomes usable substance.

Spiritual preparation includes thoughts already digested, principles proved, characteristics strengthened and resources brought into order. The initiate cannot carry every old possession into the new state, yet must carry the nourishment gained through the journey. This, the reader will recall, is the same principle as the Israelites collecting the gold earrings and other valuables when leaving Egypt. It also reflects the later command of Jesus to the rich young ruler, representing the intellect to sell all it has, then it will have treasures in heaven.

This is a teaching revealing that the intellect is a servant, not a master. The command to prepare prevents dependence upon excitement. A great promise can stimulate emotion while leaving practical functions unready. Joshua joins vision to provision. The higher purpose respects timing, food, strength, sequence and the condition of the whole people.

The crossing will occur within three days. Three signifies a complete movement through mind, soul and body, or through idea, formation and expression. The third day repeatedly marks emergence into a new state. Here the three days form an interval in which command becomes readiness.

The people already know they will cross. Preparation therefore takes place under certainty. They do not gather provisions to discover whether the promise is true. They prepare because the direction has been received.

“Ye are to pass over this Jordan.” The crossing includes responsibility for the descending current of thought and consequence. Israel will no longer remain on the bank discussing the land. The whole inner nation must enter the river and move through it.

The purpose is “to go in to possess the land”. Entry and possession remain distinct. The crossing opens access. Possession establishes government. The movement begins before the land is occupied, yet every preparation must already serve occupation.

The EVER-LIVING gives the land “to possess it”. The repeated word emphasises conscious occupation. The Body-Temple cannot remain a field governed by inherited reaction while the initiate claims spiritual understanding. The Law must take up residence and be expressed via the functions of daily life.

Joshua’s first outward command therefore concerns preparation, not battle. The saving I AM organises substance before confronting walls. This reveals a law of ReGeneration: spiritual purpose must gather and order the resources through which it will become embodied.

What the Initiate Learns from this Lesson

• That Divine direction must pass into practical organisation.

• To bring one clear command through the centre of consciousness so every function can prepare.

• That a temporary camp differs from permanent possession. Gathered faculties must become established faculties.

• To carry assimilated nourishment from the wilderness into the new stage.

• That preparation protects the work from becoming emotional enthusiasm without substance.

• That the three-day interval allows idea, formation and expression to come into agreement.

• That preparation proceeds from certainty in the Divine promise.

• That possession begins by ordering the resources through which the Law will become embodied.

Prepare the provision.
Gather the faculties.
Within three days, cross Jordan.
Go in to possess the land.

Part Four: The Eastern Tribes Accept Shared Responsibility

Joshua 1:12–18

Scripture Text

12 And to the Reubenites, and to the Gadites, and to the half-tribe of Manasseh, spake Joshua, saying,

13 Remember the word which Moses the servant of the EVER-LIVING commanded you, saying, The EVER-LIVING your God giveth you rest, and will give you this land.

14 Your wives, your little ones, and your cattle, shall abide in the land which Moses gave you beyond the Jordan; but ye shall pass over before your brethren armed, all the mighty men of valor, and shall help them;

15 until the EVER-LIVING have given your brethren rest, as he hath given you, and they also have possessed the land which the EVER-LIVING your God giveth them: then ye shall return unto the land of your possession, and possess it, which Moses the servant of the EVER-LIVING gave you beyond the Jordan toward the sunrising.

16 And they answered Joshua, saying, All that thou hast commanded us we will do, and whithersoever thou sendest us we will go.

17 According as we hearkened unto Moses in all things, so will we hearken unto thee: only the EVER-LIVING thy God be with thee, as he was with Moses.

18 Whosoever he be that shall rebel against thy commandment, and shall not hearken unto thy words in all that thou commandest him, he shall be put to death: only be strong and of good courage.

Meta-Physical Interpretation

Joshua now speaks directly to the tribes that have already received land east of Jordan. Their position tests whether early possession will become private comfort or shared service.

Reuben means: ‘behold a son’, ‘vision of the son’. Reuben represents sight, the faculty that first recognises spiritual identity. Vision can receive territory before other faculties because seeing often precedes complete embodiment. Yet sight must remain joined to the whole work.

Gad means: ‘fortune’, ‘troop’, ‘company’. Gad represents organised power, the ability to gather forces and move as a company. This faculty also receives territory early. Organised strength can establish order quickly, yet it must use that advantage to assist the entire inner nation.

Manasseh means: ‘causing to forget’, ‘one who forgets’. Manasseh represents the power to release the old identity and cease carrying the bondage of Egypt as the definition of self. Half the tribe receives land east of Jordan, showing that release has begun, while the complete work of memory and inheritance continues across the river.

Joshua commands these tribes to remember the word of Moses. Manasseh signifies forgetting, yet here forgetting the old must be joined to remembering the Law. Holy forgetting releases bondage. Holy remembrance preserves instruction. ReGeneration requires both.

The EVER-LIVING has given them rest. Rest means ordered freedom from active domination, a field where a faculty can cultivate its work. Rest does not excuse separation. A part of consciousness cannot claim full peace while the whole being remains under occupation.

Their wives, little ones and cattle remain in the eastern land. The wives represent receptive and formative capacities. The little ones represent newly generated thoughts and future development. The cattle represent natural strength, substance and the animal life brought into useful order. These must be safeguarded while the trained active forces go forward.

The mighty men of valour pass armed before their brethren. Weapons represent disciplined capacities of discrimination, decision and decisive Word. The passage does not glorify outward violence. It shows prepared faculties placing their trained strength at the service of the whole consciousness.

They pass “before” their brethren. Faculties that have already gained rest must help open the way for those still seeking possession. Vision, organised power and release from the old identity become advance forces. Their privilege creates responsibility.

They must help “until” the EVER-LIVING gives their brethren rest. Shared service has a definite purpose. They do not absorb another tribe’s inheritance or govern its field. They support the crossing and establishment until each faculty can occupy its own appointed region.

Then they may return and possess their eastern land. Their first grant becomes complete only after service. A possession enjoyed without unity remains incomplete. What the individual receives from God reaches fulfilment when it contributes to the wellbeing and order of the whole person.

The eastern land lies toward the sunrising. The east represents the within, the region from which light dawns. Reuben, Gad and half-Manasseh possess an inner preparatory territory. They must carry its illumination and strength westward into fuller manifestation.

The tribes answer: “All that thou hast commanded us we will do, and whithersoever thou sendest us we will go.” Hearing becomes obedience. The response joins action and movement. They accept both the task and the direction.

They recognise Joshua’s office while asking that the EVER-LIVING be with him as with Moses. True obedience never substitutes the human instrument for the Source. Joshua’s authority remains valid through the Presence acting within him.

The declaration concerning rebellion describes the ending of a thought’s authority to resist the central Divine direction. Death signifies the cessation of a state’s governing power. A rebellious thought cannot be allowed to organise the inner nation against the Law.

The people conclude by strengthening Joshua: “Only be strong and of good courage.” The command first came from the EVER-LIVING. It now returns through the people. Divine encouragement circulates through the whole consciousness. The leader strengthens the faculties, and the aligned faculties strengthen the leader.

Chapter One therefore ends in agreement. The EVER-LIVING commands Joshua. Joshua commands the officers and tribes. The tribes answer with obedience and courage. The whole camp gathers around one centre before the first step into Jordan.

What the Initiate Learns from this Lesson

• That early possession creates responsibility toward the faculties still seeking rest.

• That Reuben’s vision must support the complete work rather than remain detached observation.

• That Gad’s organised strength must serve the whole inner nation.

That Manasseh joins holy forgetting of bondage with holy remembrance of the Law.

• That receptive capacities, new thoughts and natural energies require protection while trained active powers advance.

• That no part of consciousness can enjoy private peace while the whole being remains unpossessed.

• That obedience honours the leader while recognising the EVER-LIVING as the Source of authority.

• That rebellion loses its power to govern when the faculties unite under the saving I AM.

Holy forgetting is essential, it is a necessary aspect of forgiveness. Just as each initiate is forgiven and cleansed by the Spirit, so too does each initiate forgive and share the Truth which cleanses the hu-man family. This cleansing is essential because the whole community must purge itself so each individual is not a constant threat to any other, which triggers the 'survival of the fittest' type of thinking which sustains division and each causing the other to sin in some way.

Vision goes forward.
Organised strength goes forward.
Release from the old identity goes forward.
The whole inner nation prepares to cross.

CHAPTER ONE SYNTHESIS

Joshua chapter one establishes the government required for possession. The former office of understanding completes its work. The saving I AM rises from continuous Life, receives the whole Law, accepts the whole land and gathers the whole people.

The chapter moves from Divine command to collective agreement. First the EVER-LIVING speaks within Joshua. Then Joshua communicates through the officers. Then the eastern tribes remember Moses, accept Joshua and pledge their strength to the whole. Divine Order descends through relationship without becoming divided.

The mouth, mind and feet form one sequence. The Law remains in the mouth, meditation carries it through day and night, observance protects it, action expresses it, and the foot establishes it upon the land. Joshua begins the conversion of instruction into character and of promise into embodied government.

No battle has occurred. Yet the most important victory has begun: the faculties have accepted one centre. The initiate is ready when understanding has yielded to action, speech agrees with Law, provision has been prepared, early strengths accept shared responsibility and courage circulates through the whole inner nation.

CHAPTER TWO

RAHAB RECEIVES THE SPIES

Joshua 2

Chapter Two enters the first stronghold before the whole nation crosses. The saving I AM sends paired faculties of observation and discernment into Jericho, where natural love, though embedded in the old wall, recognises the EVER-LIVING and opens a passage for the new order.

Part Five: Two Spies Enter Jericho

Joshua 2:1–3

Scripture Text

1 And Joshua the son of Nun sent out of Shittim two men as spies secretly, saying, Go, view the land, and Jericho. And they went and came into the house of a harlot whose name was Rahab, and lay there.

2 And it was told the king of Jericho, saying, Behold, there came men in hither to-night of the children of Israel to search out the land.

3 And the king of Jericho sent unto Rahab, saying, Bring forth the men that are come to thee, that are entered into thy house; for they are come to search out all the land.

Meta-Physical Interpretation

Joshua sends two men to view the land and Jericho. Reconnaissance precedes occupation. The saving I AM does not rush the whole consciousness against an unknown organisation. It sends observation and discernment ahead.

Two represents witness, polarity and agreement. One faculty observes the condition, while the other confirms and interprets what has been seen. The two spies differ from the twelve spies sent from the wilderness. This mission has a clear centre, a mature leader and a defined objective. It seeks knowledge for action rather than evidence upon which fear may debate the promise.

The men go secretly. Inner observation works without self-display. The initiate must enter a condition quietly enough to see its actual structure. When the lower mind knows that it is being examined, it can produce excuses, performances and defensive reasoning. Secret observation reaches beneath the surface.

Joshua sends them from Shittim. Shittim means: ‘acacias’, ‘acacia wood’, ‘thorny’. The acacia survives in dry conditions and provides durable wood. It suggests resilient life preserved through the wilderness. The thorny quality shows the final prickling remnants of pain, defence and irritability from which the crossing begins.

The spies must view the land and Jericho. The land is the whole Body-Temple. Jericho is the first organised state immediately beyond Jordan. Jericho means: ‘place of fragrance’, ‘his sweet breath’, ‘his life’, ‘his animation’, ‘his soul’, ‘his mind’, ‘his spirit’, ‘his moon renewing’. The name contains life, breath, mind and reflected light.

Jericho represents intellectual consciousness animated by reflected light. The moon does not generate the sunlight it reflects. In the same way, the intellect receives Life and intelligence from the one Mind, yet may mistake reflected capacity for an independent source. It then surrounds itself with walls and establishes a king.

The king of Jericho represents the ruling thought within this fortified intellectual state. A king organises supporting reactions, guards the gates and commands the people. The first stronghold to be faced is therefore the intellect claiming independent authority within the Body-Temple.

This is perhaps the greatest challenge for the initiate. In the world, in materialism, the intellect is lauded as being master, yet, the reality is that when it exalts itself above EVER-LIVING it becomes Satan, the Devil, the very city that must fall first before I AM can truly possess the Promised Land.

The spies enter the house of Rahab. Rahab means: ‘large’, ‘ample’, ‘spacious’, ‘breadth’, ‘freedom’, ‘unrestraint’, ‘liberty’. Rahab represents a capacity for breadth and freedom already present within the occupied city. The old structure contains an opening through which consciousness can expand beyond its walls.

Rahab is called a harlot. Metaphysically, the harlot represents natural love dispersed among many objects and joined to material exchange, appetite, approval or survival. The symbol describes a function of consciousness, not a condemnation of womanhood; natural love has descended into the sense field and has served many masters.

Yet Rahab’s house becomes the place of reception. The spies do not lodge in the palace, the military quarter or the house of a recognised authority. They enter the receptive field where natural love can recognise a greater allegiance. The Divine movement often finds its first opening in a region dismissed by the established order.

The king hears that men of Israel have entered to search the land. The old ruler senses observation as a threat. A governing error survives partly by remaining unexamined. Once spiritual discernment enters the state, the king attempts to seize the messengers before their report can return to Joshua.

The king commands Rahab to bring them forth. The old intellectual government demands that the receptive love nature betray the new ideas. Every transition contains this pressure. The established state asks the soul to surrender the very thoughts capable of opening freedom.

Rahab now stands between two governments. Her house belongs physically within Jericho’s wall, yet the spiritual messengers have entered it. The chapter will reveal whether natural love continues serving the old king or becomes a bridge through which the new order enters the land.

What the Initiate Learns from this Lesson

• That observation and discernment should examine an organised condition before the whole consciousness advances.

• That inward reconnaissance proceeds quietly, without performance or premature confrontation.

• That Shittim contains resilient life amid the last thorny remnants of the wilderness state.

• That Jericho represents intellect animated by reflected Light and is defended as though it possessed an independent source.

• That a king represents a ruling thought organising a whole state of consciousness.

• That Rahab represents breadth, freedom and natural love capable of changing allegiance.

• That a despised or dispersed part of the natural nature can become the first receptive opening into a fortified state.

• That established rulership attempts to seize the spiritual ideas that expose its structure.

Send observation and discernment.
View the land.
Enter the first stronghold quietly.
Find the receptive opening within the wall.

Part Six: Rahab Protects the Spiritual Messengers

Joshua 2:4–7

Scripture Text

4 And the woman took the two men, and hid them; and she said, Yea, the men came unto me, but I knew not whence they were:

5 and it came to pass about the time of the shutting of the gate, when it was dark, that the men went out; whither the men went I know not: pursue after them quickly; for ye will overtake them.

6 But she had brought them up to the roof, and hid them with the stalks of flax, which she had laid in order upon the roof.

7 And the men pursued after them the way to the Jordan unto the fords: and as soon as they that pursued after them were gone out, they shut the gate.

Meta-Physical Interpretation

Rahab takes the two men and hides them. Natural love protects the first thoughts of Truth from the old ruling intellect. Her allegiance has begun to change before she speaks her confession.

To hide a spiritual idea means to hold it inwardly while it remains formative. New understanding can be damaged by premature display, hostile argument or the demand to justify itself before it has rooted. The receptive faculty provides concealment until the right relationship has formed.

Rahab acknowledges that the men came to her, yet refuses to deliver them to the king. The old ruler has no rightful claim over the spiritual messengers. The deeper meaning concerns transfer of government. A state built upon fear and independent intellect cannot command the soul to betray the ideas that lead toward Life.

The gate is shutting and darkness is falling. A gate controls what enters and leaves an organised state. Darkness represents lack of spiritual understanding. Jericho closes itself precisely while a true opening has appeared inside the wall. The outer gate shuts, yet Rahab’s inward receptivity remains open.

The pursuers follow the road toward Jordan and the fords. The lower mind assumes that the spiritual thoughts will retreat toward the old boundary. It searches along the visible route and looks for an outward escape. Meanwhile the messengers remain concealed above the house.

Rahab has taken them to the roof. The roof represents the highest plane available within the natural state. Though her house stands inside Jericho, she lifts the messengers above the ordinary traffic of the city. Natural love raises the spiritual ideas toward a higher level of perception.

She hides them beneath stalks of flax laid in order. Flax becomes linen through preparation. Linen represents purified conduct and the fine, ordered expression of spiritual substance. The stalks have been gathered and arranged, showing that the receptive field already contains material capable of refinement.

The spies rest beneath what will become a clean garment. Spiritual observation and discernment are protected by an emerging order in thought and conduct. Rahab has not completed transformation, yet she has begun arranging the substance through which a new identity can later be clothed.

The phrase “laid in order” is important. Love protects Truth through order, not through emotional confusion. The flax is not scattered across the roof. It has been placed deliberately. Receptivity becomes a bridge when it can gather, arrange and preserve the new idea.

The pursuers leave the city, and the gate closes behind them. The old ruler has sent its active defensive forces in the wrong direction. Error often searches outward for the cause of its instability while the true change is taking place within its own wall. The unillumined intellect is loath to accept it is the cause of its own suffering and seeks to place the blame elsewhere.

The closed gate also traps the old state inside its own defence. Jericho believes it has secured itself, yet the spiritual messengers remain within and Rahab has changed allegiance. A wall cannot protect a government once a receptive centre inside it recognises a higher authority.

This passage reveals the early work of the Spirit of intuition. Intuition is the still small voice of the Spiritual tutor within. The receptive faculty knows what must be protected before the intellect can explain the whole process. It shelters the seed of Truth and refuses the demand of the established ruler.

Remember, the teachings were written in hindsight after the intellect of the authors had passed through the rite of initiation the sacred texts describe. While those of you reading these texts are working your way through them. Only after the process is completed is the understanding fulfilled.

The initiate should therefore guard emerging insight from the forces that would capture, debate, expose or scatter it. Silence and inward order have their appointed place. The idea will later return to Joshua and guide the whole nation. For the present, it rests beneath the flax upon the roof.

What the Initiate Learns from this Lesson

• To protect formative spiritual ideas from premature exposure.

• That the old ruling intellect has no rightful claim over thoughts received from the Higher Mind.

• That an outer gate may close while an inward opening remains available.

• That the lower mind often searches outward while transformation begins within its own structure.

• To lift new ideas to the highest available plane of natural consciousness.

• That flax laid in order represents substance being prepared for purified expression.

• That receptive love protects Truth through quiet order rather than emotional confusion.

• That a fortified state begins to fall when a centre within its wall changes allegiance.

Hide the spiritual messengers.
Lift them to the roof.
Lay the flax in order.
Let the old pursuit pass by.

Part Seven: Rahab Hears and Knows

Joshua 2:8–11

Scripture Text

8 And before they were laid down, she came up unto them upon the roof;

9 and she said unto the men, I know that the EVER-LIVING hath given you the land, and that the fear of you is fallen upon us, and that all the inhabitants of the land melt away before you.

10 For we have heard how the EVER-LIVING dried up the water of the Red Sea before you, when ye came out of Egypt; and what ye did unto the two kings of the Amorites, that were beyond the Jordan, unto Sihon and to Og, whom ye utterly destroyed.

11 And as soon as we had heard it, our hearts did melt, neither did there remain any more spirit in any man, because of you: for the EVER-LIVING your God, he is God in heaven above, and on earth beneath.

Meta-Physical Interpretation

Rahab comes up to the spies before they lie down. The receptive faculty rises to the higher plane and speaks before the spiritual messengers enter rest. Her confession completes the inward recognition begun through protection.

She says, “I know”. Hearing has become inward certainty. Rahab has received reports of the Red Sea and the eastern kings, yet she does more than repeat information. She recognises the Divine action behind the events and places her trust in it.

Natural love becomes faith when it centres upon spiritual things. Rahab has lived within the sense order, yet her capacity for breadth allows her to receive a reality larger than Jericho’s walls. The harlot state begins to end when love ceases dispersing itself among many masters and gives allegiance to the one EVER-LIVING.

She knows that the land has been given to Israel. Her confession agrees with the command spoken to Joshua before Israel crosses. A receptive centre inside Jericho already bears witness to the promise. The old city contains its own confirmation that its ruler’s authority is ending.

Fear has fallen upon the inhabitants, and they melt away. The apparent solidity of the old order depends upon belief. When consciousness recognises the movement of the EVER-LIVING, the organised fear beneath the walls begins to lose cohesion. The inhabitants melt before a visible battle occurs.

Rahab has heard how the Red Sea dried up. The Red Sea represents the boundary where sense bondage was crossed and error separated from Truth. Egypt means: ‘darkness’, ‘limitation’, ‘the realm of sense bondage’. The memory of deliverance travels ahead of Israel and prepares the land.

The old order has also heard of Sihon and Og. Sihon means: ‘sweeping away’, ‘warrior’, ‘tempestuous’. He represents forceful reasoning that attempts to sweep aside the advancing spiritual consciousness. Og means: ‘long-necked’, ‘gigantic’, ‘extended’. He represents enlarged selfhood and giant belief ruling fertile strength. Their defeat proves that loud reasoning and magnified self-will can lose authority.

The two kings were beyond Jordan. Their overthrow occurred before the present crossing. The initiate does not arrive at every new threshold without evidence of Divine action. Previous victories form a body of living testimony. Rahab gathers that testimony and interprets it correctly.

This contrasts with the former generation at Kadesh. They saw giants and concluded that Israel could not enter. Rahab lives inside a fortified city and concludes that the EVER-LIVING has given Israel the land. The meaning of evidence depends upon the centre from which it is read.

The hearts of Jericho melt. The heart represents motive, desire and the centre from which a state responds. When the heart of the old order loses confidence, its outer walls remain standing for a time, yet its inward government has already weakened.

No spirit remains in any man. The ruling thoughts have lost their animating conviction. Jericho still has a king, messengers, gates and walls, but the life that sustained their confidence is departing. Outward structure can continue briefly after inward authority has ended.

Rahab declares that the EVER-LIVING is God in heaven above and earth beneath. Heaven represents the realm of Divine idea and spiritual understanding. Earth represents embodied expression. Her confession unites the two. The same God governs mind and body, unseen cause and visible effect.

This recognition prepares Joshua’s central work. The Promised Land cannot be restored while matter is treated as a separate power. Rahab sees that the EVER-LIVING governs both heaven and earth. The Body-Temple belongs to the same Life that gives the promise.

Rahab therefore becomes the first voice from within Canaan to confess the one Divine government. Her natural love, broadened into faith, opens the way for the spiritual nation. A bridge forms inside the wall before the river is crossed.

What the Initiate Learns from this Lesson

• That hearing must become inward knowing.

• That natural love becomes faith when it centres upon the EVER-LIVING.

• That a receptive centre inside an old structure can recognise the promise before the outer structure changes.

• That the authority of fear begins to melt when Divine action is recognised.

• To carry the memory of former deliverance into the present threshold.

• That forceful reasoning and giant self-will have already been shown to possess no final authority.

• That evidence can produce fear or faith according to the centre from which it is interpreted.

• That the EVER-LIVING governs heaven above and earth beneath, thought and body, cause and expression.

We have heard.
The heart of the old order melts.
Natural love becomes faith.
The EVER-LIVING is God in heaven and earth.

Part Eight: A Covenant of Kindness and a True Token

Joshua 2:12–14

Scripture Text

12 Now therefore, I pray you, swear unto me by the EVER-LIVING, since I have dealt kindly with you, that ye also will deal kindly with my father’s house, and give me a true token;

13 and that ye will save alive my father, and my mother, and my brethren, and my sisters, and all that they have, and will deliver our lives from death.

14 And the men said unto her, Our life for yours, if ye utter not this our business; and it shall be, when the EVER-LIVING giveth us the land, that we will deal kindly and truly with thee.

Meta-Physical Interpretation

Rahab now asks for covenant. Recognition of the EVER-LIVING leads to relationship, responsibility and a definite sign. Faith seeks a form through which it can remain joined to the promise.

She asks the men to swear by the EVER-LIVING. Her appeal no longer rests upon the king of Jericho, the security of the wall or the customs of the city. She places the agreement under the highest Name she has confessed.

Rahab has dealt kindly with the messengers. Kindness here expresses faithful care, protection and covenant loyalty. She has risked the old ruler’s approval to preserve the spiritual ideas. Her action gives substance to her confession.

She asks that kindness return to her father’s house. The father represents the originating principle of a thought-family. The mother represents its receptive and formative matrix. Brothers and sisters represent related active and receptive expressions. Rahab gathers the whole field connected with her.

Natural love seeks to preserve its household. When love turns toward Spirit, it does not abandon every capacity that developed around it. It gathers those relationships under a new centre so they may pass from the old city into Life.

Rahab asks for a true token. A token makes the covenant recognisable in the visible field. Truth must have correspondence. An inward promise requires an outward sign through which the participating faculties can identify and honour it.

The true token will later become the scarlet line in the window. At this stage the request establishes the need for a clear mark. The initiate must know where faith has made covenant and how that covenant will be remembered when the old structure falls.

Rahab asks that they save alive. The purpose of the covenant is Life. The destruction of Jericho symbolises the ending of a ruling state’s authority, while the receptive household joined to faith is preserved. Divine judgment separates government from capacity, error from the Life previously used to sustain it.

The two men answer, “Our life for yours.” The spiritual messengers place their own life in pledge. Observation and discernment do not remain detached analysts. They enter covenant with the receptive faculty that protected them.

The phrase also reveals correspondence. Life answers Life. Rahab has preserved the messengers; the messengers pledge preservation of her household. The Law returns according to motive and action. Kindness produces a field in which kindness can operate.

The agreement includes secrecy. “If ye utter not this our business.” The covenant remains formative until the appointed action. Speech can protect or scatter a sacred process. Rahab must keep the inner work from being handed back to the old city’s government.

The men say, “when the EVER-LIVING giveth us the land”. They remain centred in the Source. Their promise depends upon Divine fulfilment, yet they accept responsibility for their part within it. The EVER-LIVING gives; the messengers deal kindly and truly.

Kindness and truth must remain joined. Kindness without truth can preserve an old state through sentiment. Truth without kindness can become cold and destructive. The covenant protects Life while ending the authority of the wall around it.

Rahab’s request therefore marks the movement from private recognition to household salvation. Natural love has opened to Spirit, protected the messengers, confessed the one God and now gathers its whole related field under covenant.

What the Initiate Learns from this Lesson

• That faith seeks covenant, responsibility and visible correspondence.

• To place agreements under the EVER-LIVING rather than under the security of an old structure.

• That kindness gains spiritual substance through protective action.

• That natural love can gather its whole household under a new centre.

• That a true token allows inward covenant to be recognised in the visible field.

• That Divine judgment preserves Life while ending the authority of error.

• That spiritual observation and discernment must enter living relationship with the receptive faculty.

• To join kindness with truth.

Deal kindly.
Ask for a true token.
Gather the household.
Let Life answer Life.

Part Nine: The Window, the Cord and the Scarlet Line

Joshua 2:15–21

Scripture Text

15 Then she let them down by a cord through the window: for her house was upon the side of the wall, and she dwelt upon the wall.

16 And she said unto them, Get you to the mountain, lest the pursuers light upon you; and hide yourselves there three days, until the pursuers be returned: and afterward may ye go your way.

17 And the men said unto her, We will be guiltless of this thine oath which thou hast made us to swear.

18 Behold, when we come into the land, thou shalt bind this line of scarlet thread in the window which thou didst let us down by: and thou shalt gather unto thee into the house thy father, and thy mother, and thy brethren, and all thy father’s household.

19 And it shall be, that whosoever shall go out of the doors of thy house into the street, his blood shall be upon his head, and we shall be guiltless: and whosoever shall be with thee in the house, his blood shall be on our head, if any hand be upon him.

20 But if thou utter this our business, then we shall be guiltless of thine oath which thou hast made us to swear.

21 And she said, According unto your words, so be it. And she sent them away, and they departed: and she bound the scarlet line in the window.

Meta-Physical Interpretation

Rahab lets the spies down through the window by a cord. The same house that received and concealed them now provides their passage out of the city. Receptive faith becomes a bridge between the inner reconnaissance and the saving I AM beyond Jordan.

Her house stands upon the side of the wall, and she dwells upon the wall. Rahab lives at the boundary between the enclosed state and the world beyond it. Natural love occupies a threshold position. It can serve the old city, or it can open the way through the very structure designed to prevent passage.

The window represents perception, imagination and an opening through which consciousness sees beyond its enclosure. The gate belongs to the king and is shut. The window belongs to the receptive household and remains open. The official route closes while intuitive perception creates another way.

The cord represents connection, continuity and a line capable of bearing weight. Faith creates a practical connection through which they can descend safely from the high place and return to Joshua.

Rahab directs the men toward the mountain. A mountain represents an elevated state of consciousness, a place above the ordinary pursuit of the lower mind. The messengers must return through height before they return through the river.

They are to hide for three days. The three-day period appears again. Spiritual observation must pass through a complete cycle of inward assimilation before reporting. The information gathered in Jericho rises to the mountain, rests, and then returns in usable form.

The pursuers search the roads, but the spies remain in the elevated state. Lower reasoning cannot seize an idea held above its field of action. When the old search exhausts itself, the messengers can descend without interference.

The men now define the token. Rahab must bind a line of scarlet thread in the same window. Scarlet signifies embodied life, blood, vitality and the visible life-current. The line identifies the household joined to covenant.

The scarlet sign recalls the Passover doorway. In Egypt, the blood marked the house where Life was consciously placed under obedience to the EVER-LIVING. In Jericho, the scarlet line marks the opening through which faith served the spiritual messengers. Both signs identify a household gathered around Life while an old order reaches its end.

The line must be bound. A loose intention cannot serve as covenant. Binding represents a definite commitment, a Word joined to action and held in place. Rahab must establish the sign before the visible crisis arrives.

She must gather father, mother, brethren and the whole household inside. The house becomes a centre of ordered faith within the condemned city. Salvation requires gathering. Scattered related thoughts must come under the same covenant consciousness.

The distinction between house and street concerns states of consciousness. The house represents the inwardly gathered field under covenant. The street represents the public traffic of the old city, the movement of thoughts still exposed to its government. Remaining inside means remaining centred in the agreement with Life.

The men accept responsibility for everyone within the house. Covenant creates a protected field. Yet anyone who leaves that field returns to the old city’s traffic and assumes the consequences of that choice. Divine Law respects both promise and participation.

Rahab must also keep the business confidential. The window opens toward freedom, yet speech could reopen the matter to the king. The formative covenant requires disciplined silence until the new order arrives.

Rahab answers: “According unto your words, so be it.” This is an inner Amen. Receptive love accepts the Word and gives it form. She does not postpone obedience until the walls begin to shake.

She immediately binds the scarlet line in the window. Faith acts before visible evidence. The sign appears while Jericho still stands, the king still rules and Israel remains beyond Jordan. Rahab’s window already belongs to the coming order.

This action makes Rahab a living bridge. Her body, house, window, cord, speech and household all enter the covenant. The invisible promise takes a visible line. Natural love becomes a place where the unseen saving purpose touches the seen world.

What the Initiate Learns from this Lesson

• That receptive faith can open a passage through the very wall that once confined it.

• That the window of perception may remain open when the official gate of the old order closes.

• That a cord represents practical connection capable of carrying spiritual ideas safely.

• To raise insight to the mountain and allow a complete period of assimilation.

• That the scarlet line identifies embodied Life joined to covenant.

• To bind the sign through definite commitment rather than loose intention.

• To gather related thoughts and capacities inside one ordered household of faith.

• To act upon the Word before visible conditions change.

Open the window.
Bind the scarlet line.
Gather the household.
Let faith become the bridge between unseen promise and seen life.

Part Ten: The Spies Return with the Right Report

Joshua 2:22–24

Scripture Text

22 And they went, and came unto the mountain, and abode there three days, until the pursuers were returned: and the pursuers sought them throughout all the way, but found them not.

23 Then the two men returned, and descended from the mountain, and passed over, and came to Joshua the son of Nun; and they told him all that had befallen them.

24 And they said unto Joshua, Truly the EVER-LIVING hath delivered into our hands all the land; and moreover all the inhabitants of the land do melt away before us.

Meta-Physical Interpretation

The spies follow Rahab’s instruction. They go to the mountain and remain three days. Observation and discernment rise above the field examined and allow the experience to become integrated before reporting.

The pursuers search throughout all the way and find nothing. The old ruler’s forces exhaust themselves along the visible paths. They cannot reach the elevated state where the spiritual witnesses rest.

After three days, the two men return. The complete cycle has produced a coherent report. They descend from the mountain because insight must come down from elevation into the executive centre. A revelation that never returns to practical direction cannot guide the crossing.

They pass over and come to Joshua the son of Nun. The observations return to the saving I AM born from continuous Life. Joshua gathers evidence without surrendering his centre to it. The report serves the promise.

They tell him all that befell them. Nothing essential is concealed. Mature reconnaissance reports the receptive opening, the king’s reaction, the fear in the land, Rahab’s confession, the covenant and the route of return. The executive faculty receives the whole pattern.

The spies conclude: “Truly the EVER-LIVING hath delivered into our hands all the land.” Their report begins with the EVER-LIVING. They do not magnify the walls, king or gates. They interpret every detail through Divine action.

This report corrects the former report from Numbers. The earlier spies saw fruitfulness, walls and giants, then allowed fear to govern interpretation. Joshua and Caleb held the promise, but the old generation accepted the adverse report. Now two spies return from the same land with one voice of faith.

The right report does not deny the existence of a fortified city. It recognises the state’s inward condition. The inhabitants melt. The walls remain visible, yet the animating confidence behind them has weakened. Spiritual discernment sees the cause beneath the appearance.

The phrase “into our hands” refers to agency. The hand represents action, handling, responsibility and practical power. The land has entered the field of lawful action. Israel must still cross, sanctify, march and obey, yet the old government has already lost its final claim.

The two witnesses agree. Observation and discernment have become one report. Inner conflict between what is seen and what is spiritually known has ended. The faculties can now move without reproducing the divided testimony that delayed the former generation.

Rahab’s existence inside Jericho proves that the old state is not a single undifferentiated evil. A receptive love faculty can be separated from the ruling structure and preserved. The report therefore gives Joshua both confidence and discernment.

Chapter Two ends before Israel crosses Jordan. The inner condition of the land has been known in advance. Faith inside the wall and faith outside the river have entered covenant. The first true bridge into Canaan already exists.

The victory of this chapter is the right report. Before walls fall outwardly, the inner nation must stop magnifying them through speech. Degenerate, selfish, greedy words that are divisive, hateful, hostile and self-aggrandising, and those claiming authority one person over another, must cease and be replaced with kind, caring nurturing words. So, the Word carried back to Joshua now agrees with the Word spoken by the EVER-LIVING: the land is given.

What the Initiate Learns from this Lesson

• To lift observation into a higher state before drawing conclusions.

• That lower pursuit cannot reach an idea held in spiritual elevation.

• That insight must descend from the mountain and return to the executive centre.

• To report the whole pattern without magnifying the old ruler.

• To begin interpretation with the action of the EVER-LIVING.

• That the right report corrects inherited fear and prepares the new generation to move.

• To see the inward melting of an old state beneath its remaining visible walls.

• That observation and discernment must agree before the whole consciousness advances.

The spies return.
The witnesses agree.
The old inhabitants melt.
Truly, the EVER-LIVING has delivered the land.

CHAPTER TWO SYNTHESIS

Joshua chapter two reveals that the first opening into the land appears through receptive faith within the old structure-where an adept speaks and an initiate willingly receives, the consciousness of the initiate is correctly prepared. This is reiterated later in the Gospel, where the "seed is the word".

Jericho’s king senses the threat of spiritual observation, yet cannot command Rahab’s allegiance. Natural love broadens into faith, protects the messengers and confesses the one God in heaven and earth. This is a very powerful point of realisation in each initiate's rite of passage.

Rahab’s house stands in the wall. This makes her the bridge between the old enclosed state and the coming spiritual government. The gate of official authority closes, while the window of perception remains open. The cord carries the spies, and the scarlet line marks embodied Life joined to covenant.

The chapter also corrects the law of report. Evidence no longer becomes material for fear. The spies return through the mountain, report all that occurred and place every observation beneath the statement that the EVER-LIVING has delivered the land. Speech now prepares possession instead of delaying it. The initiate is drawing forth from the inner Divine Law written within and speaking it boldly.

Before Israel enters Jordan, faith has already appeared beyond it. The saving movement outside the wall and the receptive movement inside the wall recognise one another. The Promised Land contains a living response to the advancing Presence.

CHAPTER THREE

ISRAEL CROSSES THE JORDAN

Joshua 3

Chapter Three brings the whole nation to the descending life stream. The Ark goes before them, the priests place their feet in the overflowing water, the inherited current is arrested at Adam beside Zarethan, and every faculty passes clean over on dry ground.

Part Eleven: Follow the Ark into a Way Never Travelled

Joshua 3:1–4

Scripture Text

1 And Joshua rose up early in the morning; and they removed from Shittim, and came to the Jordan, he and all the children of Israel; and they lodged there before they passed over.

2 And it came to pass after three days, that the officers went through the midst of the camp;

3 and they commanded the people, saying, When ye see the ark of the covenant of the EVER-LIVING your God, and the priests the Levites bearing it, then ye shall remove from your place, and go after it.

4 Yet there shall be a space between you and it, about two thousand cubits by measure: come not near unto it, that ye may know the way by which ye must go; for ye have not passed this way heretofore.

Meta-Physical Interpretation

Joshua rises early in the morning. The executive I AM responds at the dawning of the appointed state. Early rising represents alertness, willingness and movement before distraction gathers authority. Spiritual renewal demands that we establish focus early and maintain it throughout the day.

Morning follows the inward night of preparation. The Law has been meditated upon day and night, the provisions have been prepared, the spies have returned, and the right report has been received. Action now begins with the first light.

Joshua and all Israel remove from Shittim. The whole inner nation leaves the place of acacias and thorns. Resilient life has been preserved through the dry wilderness, yet the camp can no longer remain among the thorny remnants of transition.

They come to Jordan and lodge there before crossing. Jordan must be faced consciously. The people do not rush into the current on arrival. They remain at the threshold and allow the whole consciousness to recognise the boundary before it passes through.

Patience. Familiarity with the surroundings, mapping the progress forward come first. One of the greatest forms of degenerate behaviour is seeking to force order and make it subject to the intellect's self-limiting ways.

The lodge differs from a permanent settlement. It is a deliberate pause in movement. The initiate may stand before a decisive change long enough to gather attention without turning the pause into delay.

After three days the officers move through the camp. The third day again marks completion and emergence. The direction first communicated in chapter one has matured into immediate instruction for the crossing.

The people must watch for the Ark of the Covenant. The Ark represents the realised Presence of the EVER-LIVING, the living Law, mercy and the spiritual Self at the centre of being. Israel does not invent the path. It follows the Presence into it. Neither does the initiate - 'forcing the way' results in a multitude of calamities as can be seen all around us.

Throughout the journey, the rite of passage, everything occurs according to Divine Order.

The priests, the Levites, bear the Ark. Levi means joining. The Levites represent faculties joined to God through consecration, service and spiritual teaching. The Ark requires a consciousness capable of bearing sacred responsibility without claiming or appropriating the Presence as personal property.

When the people see the Ark move, they must remove from their place. Sight receives the signal, then the whole camp changes position. Spiritual perception has practical consequence. A recognised movement of the Presence calls the faculties out of their former arrangement; Wisdom makes itself plain and feeds Faith.

They follow; the Presence leads. The executive I AM directs the people to follow what is higher than itself. Joshua’s leadership remains true because Joshua follows the EVER-LIVING.

A space of about two thousand cubits remains between the people and the Ark. The distance preserves reverence, visibility and order. This is a safe distance to maintain clarity. It prevents the crowd of personal reactions from surrounding the sacred centre so closely that direction becomes obscured.

The people need to see the way. A clear field around the Ark allows every tribe to recognise its movement. When personal urgency crowds the Presence, the individual may confuse impulse with guidance. Sacred space protects discernment.

They have not passed this way before. The crossing cannot be governed entirely by memory. Previous lessons provide Wisdom, yet the present path requires focus, living attention. The Ark, not past experience or habit, is to show the way.

This statement also protects the initiate from pretending familiarity. New embodiment brings unfamiliar responses in the Body-Temple. The faculties must remain teachable. The presence of the EVER-LIVING makes the unknown path navigable.

Notice the precision of the sequence: rise early, leave Shittim, lodge before Jordan, complete the three days, see the Ark, remove from the former place, preserve sacred distance and follow. Possession begins through ordered attention.

What the Initiate Learns from this Lesson

• To rise with the first light of the appointed state.

• To leave the thorny transitional camp when its work has completed.

• To face the threshold consciously without turning pause into delay.

• That the Ark represents the realised Presence and living Law at the centre of being.

• That consecrated faculties bear the Presence into action.

• To remove from the former place when the Ark moves.

• That sacred space preserves visibility, reverence and discernment.

• To follow living guidance because the new way has not been travelled before.

Rise early.
Leave Shittim.
See the Ark.
Follow the Presence into the unknown way.

Part Twelve: Sanctify Yourselves and Stand Still in Jordan

Joshua 3:5–8

Scripture Text

5 And Joshua said unto the people, Sanctify yourselves; for tomorrow the EVER-LIVING will do wonders among you.

6 And Joshua spake unto the priests, saying, Take up the ark of the covenant, and pass over before the people. And they took up the ark of the covenant, and went before the people.

7 And the EVER-LIVING said unto Joshua, This day will I begin to magnify thee in the sight of all Israel, that they may know that, as I was with Moses, so I will be with thee.

8 And thou shalt command the priests that bear the ark of the covenant, saying, When ye are come to the brink of the waters of the Jordan, ye shall stand still in the Jordan.

Meta-Physical Interpretation

Joshua commands the people to sanctify themselves. Sanctification means setting the whole being apart for the EVER-LIVING. The faculties prepare motive, attention, speech, feeling and conduct for sacred use.

Sanctification goes deeper than ceremonial appearance. The people are about to enter the Body-Temple. Every faculty must recognise that the crossing serves Divine possession rather than personal excitement, conquest or advantage.

The command addresses the people themselves: “Sanctify yourselves.” The EVER-LIVING supplies the Presence and the wonder, while the faculties accept responsibility for their condition. Conscious participation prepares the field in which Divine action becomes visible. Each individual is to participate consciously in their own Salvation.

“Tomorrow the EVER-LIVING will do wonders among you.” Tomorrow represents the next state emerging from today’s preparation. The wonder does not bypass sanctification. The Divine work appears among a people who have gathered themselves under sacred purpose.

The wonder occurs “among you”. It is not merely an external spectacle. The current changes within the field of consciousness. The faculties experience the Presence opening a way through the very stream that once appeared to prevent passage.

Joshua tells the priests to take up the Ark and pass before the people. The priestly faculty acts first because faith and consecrated discernment must carry the realised Presence into the threshold.

The priests take up the Ark. They respond directly. Sacred responsibility requires both reverence and action. The Ark cannot lead while remaining stationary in the camp. Faith without works is dead.

The EVER-LIVING says that Joshua will be magnified in the sight of Israel. Magnification makes the true office recognisable. It does not enlarge the personality (which some may still call 'ego'). The people need to know that the saving I AM carries the same Divine Presence that worked through Moses.

Moses represented understanding. Joshua represents saving action. The continuity of Presence confirms that embodiment does not abandon the Law. It fulfils the Law in another office.

The magnification begins “this day”. Joshua’s authority becomes evident through the crossing. True spiritual authority reveals itself through capacity to bring the faculties safely under Divine Order, not through titles or external declaration.

Joshua is to command the priests when they reach the brink of Jordan. The brink is the edge where stable ground meets moving water, where known order meets the flood of accumulated thought and consequence.

The priests must stand still in Jordan. Standing still is neither hesitation nor passivity. It is stable faith placed within movement. The feet enter the current, yet the centre does not move with the turbulence.

Jordan represents the descending flow of mortal thought, race thought, judgment, emotion and bodily consequence. The priestly faculties do not fight the water. They bear the Ark into it and establish stillness at its centre.

The instruction resembles “Be still, and know”. Stillness allows the Presence to govern the current. Stillness does not require a sitting position or silent meditation. Stillness is being at one's centre and observing, not allowing the flow around you to move you from that place. Personal force would add disturbance. Consecrated stability gives the Divine Order a place from which the waters can be cut off.

The priests stand in the river before the people cross. A spiritual centre must remain steady long enough for every faculty to pass. The work of priesthood includes holding the field while the whole inner nation moves through transformation.

This passage therefore joins sanctification, wonder, true authority and stillness. The people set themselves apart. The priests carry the Presence. Joshua’s office becomes known. Faith stands within the flood.

What the Initiate Learns from this Lesson

• That sanctification sets motive, attention and action apart for the EVER-LIVING.

• That Divine wonder appears through a field consciously prepared for sacred purpose.

• That the priestly faculty must carry the realised Presence into the threshold.

That true authority becomes recognisable through service and fulfilled function.

• That Joshua continues Moses by embodying the Law in action.

• That the brink of Jordan is the meeting place between stable ground and accumulated current.

• To stand still within movement rather than adding personal turbulence.

• That the spiritual centre must hold the field until every faculty has crossed.

Sanctify yourselves.
Take up the Ark.
Pass before the people.
Stand still in Jordan.

Part Thirteen: The Living God Is Among You

Joshua 3:9–12

Scripture Text

9 And Joshua said unto the children of Israel, Come hither, and hear the words of the EVER-LIVING your God.

10 And Joshua said, Hereby ye shall know that the living God is among you, and that he will without fail drive out from before you the Canaanite, and the Hittite, and the Hivite, and the Perizzite, and the Girgashite, and the Amorite, and the Jebusite.

11 Behold, the ark of the covenant of the Lord of all the earth passeth over before you into the Jordan.

12 Now therefore take you twelve men out of the tribes of Israel, for every tribe a man.

Meta-Physical Interpretation

Joshua calls the children of Israel to come near and hear the words of the EVER-LIVING. Before the feet enter the water, the whole inner nation must gather around the Word. Hearing establishes the meaning of the crossing.

The children of Israel are the phases of Spiritual evolution brought forth within consciousness. They must hear because every developing faculty requires one Divine direction. The journey cannot be completed by disconnected powers following separate interpretations.

Joshua says, “Hereby ye shall know that the living God is among you.” The crossing will become embodied evidence of Presence. God is known as living through action within the whole field, opening a way where accumulated thought appeared absolute.

The living God is “among you”. The Presence does not remain outside the person as a distant ruler. It operates within the gathered faculties and through the Ark carried into the river. Joshua prepares the transition from God conceived outwardly to Divine Life recognised within.

The evidence of the living God includes the displacement of seven nations. Seven signifies a complete cycle of natural consciousness. These nations represent families of established tendencies occupying the Body-Temple.

Canaanites represent thoughts belonging to the low, material or trafficking consciousness. Canaan also means merchant and trafficker. This state measures life through exchange, possession, outward advantage and material value. The living God displaces the idea that the Body-Temple exists for trade in personal gain.

Hittites means: ‘fear’, ‘terror’, ‘broken or dismayed thoughts’. These tendencies fragment consciousness, contract the body and organise action around anticipated danger. Their removal restores the faculties from fear-based government.

Hivites means: ‘villagers’, ‘life-giving or living thoughts at the natural level’. The Hivite state represents natural vitality organised through effort and physical existence without conscious union with the Source. Its life must be raised from mere survival into spiritual government.

Perizzites means: ‘rustics’, ‘dwellers in unwalled villages’, ‘unprotected thoughts’. These states lack clear boundaries and spiritual defence. They allow every passing influence to enter. Divine possession establishes wise protection without building walls of fear. The boundaries exist through restraint of behaviour.

Girgashites means: ‘clayey soil’, ‘dwellers in the earth’, ‘materialised thoughts’. They represent consciousness fixed in dense materiality and limited to what the senses can handle. Their removal frees the earth element of the Body-Temple to become responsive to Spirit.

Amorites means: ‘mountaineers’, ‘high-speaking or prominent thoughts’, ‘dominant sense beliefs’. These are loud, exalted assertions placed upon the heights of consciousness. They speak with confidence while drawing authority from sense perception. Divine Law removes their claim to rule.

Jebusites means: ‘trodden down’, ‘threshing-floor thoughts’, ‘states that oppress or are oppressed’. They represent the cycle in which consciousness alternates between domination and humiliation. The living God restores the peace centre from both the oppressor and the oppressed identity.

The nations will be driven out “from before you”. The faculties move forward while the old tendencies lose their place of government. The work concerns displacement of authority. The Life they misused returns to the EVER-LIVING and becomes available for right expression.

The Ark belongs to the Lord of all the earth. Earth includes the body, substance and visible field. This title establishes ownership before crossing. The Body-Temple has never belonged to fear, appetite, inherited belief or material trade. It belongs to the one Life.

The Ark passes before the people into Jordan. The living covenant enters the descending current first. Divine Law does not remain upon the bank giving instructions to the body from a distance. It enters the stream of embodiment. The initiate becomes more and more aware that we do not breathe, the Divine is Breathing Through Us.

Joshua appoints twelve men, one from every tribe. Twelve represents the complete order of faculties. Each tribe must have a witness because the crossing concerns the whole consciousness. No power can later claim that the passage belonged only to the priests or leader.

The twelve men will carry stones in the next chapter, yet their appointment occurs here. The experience prepares its own future memory. Divine Order anticipates the need to establish testimony after the crossing.

The passage therefore gives the crossing its full meaning: the living God among the faculties, the old natural cycle displaced, the Lord of the whole earth entering the current, and the complete twelvefold consciousness prepared to bear witness.

What the Initiate Learns from this Lesson

• To gather the developing faculties around the Word before decisive action.

• That the living God is known through Divine action among the faculties.

• That the Body-Temple belongs to the Lord of all the earth.

• To identify material trafficking, fear, effort-bound vitality, unprotected thought, material fixation, high-speaking sense belief and oppression as families of tendencies rather than independent powers.

• That displacement ends the authority of an old state while returning its life-energy to Divine use.

• That the Ark enters the embodied current rather than remaining as an abstract idea upon the bank.

• That the crossing includes the complete twelvefold consciousness.

That a great transformation must later be carried into permanent testimony.

Come hither and hear.
Know the living God among you.
Let the old nations lose their government.
The Lord of all the earth goes before you.

Part Fourteen: The Waters Stand in One Heap

Joshua 3:13–16

Scripture Text

13 And it shall come to pass, when the soles of the feet of the priests that bear the ark of the EVER-LIVING, the Lord of all the earth, shall rest in the waters of the Jordan, that the waters of the Jordan shall be cut off, even the waters that come down from above; and they shall stand in one heap.

14 And it came to pass, when the people removed from their tents, to pass over the Jordan, the priests that bare the ark of the covenant being before the people;

15 and when they that bare the ark were come unto the Jordan, and the feet of the priests that bare the ark were dipped in the brink of the water, for the Jordan overfloweth all its banks all the time of harvest,

16 that the waters which came down from above stood, and rose up in one heap, a great way off, at Adam, the city that is beside Zarethan; and those that went down toward the sea of the Arabah, even the Salt Sea, were wholly cut off: and the people passed over right against Jericho.

Meta-Physical Interpretation

The soles of the priests’ feet must rest in the waters. The sole represents practical understanding and the foundation of movement. The priests do more than touch the current. They place their weight upon the spiritual foundation while standing within it.

The Ark of the EVER-LIVING, Lord of all the earth, remains upon their shoulders. Faith enters the river bearing the consciousness that the body and all substance belong to Divine Life. This realised ownership changes the relationship to the current.

The waters coming down from above are cut off. Jordan is the descending stream through which ideas, race thought, emotional patterns and judgments enter embodied expression. When the Ark stands in the stream, the former flow no longer continues unchecked into the body. The initiate's ability to temper the forces of the Race Thought Atmosphere increases.

The waters stand in one heap. What previously moved unconsciously becomes gathered and visible. Divine Presence arrests the momentum of inherited thought so the faculties can see that the current possesses no independent necessity.

The people remove from their tents. Tents represent temporary states and habits. The whole inner nation leaves provisional consciousness and moves toward stable possession.

The priests go before the people. Consecrated faith enters the flood before the ordinary faculties. This order prevents the lower mind from leading the crossing through fear or personal force.

Jordan overflows all its banks at harvest time. The crossing does not occur during a conveniently diminished current. Harvest represents matured results. The flood is full because accumulated causes have reached expression.

This detail reveals that Divine Order opens the way at the height of consequence. The initiate need not wait until inherited thought becomes weak by itself. The Presence can establish a passage when the current appears fullest.

The priests dip their feet in the brink before the water changes. Faith acts upon the Law before outer evidence confirms the path. The foot enters because the Word has been heard, the Presence is carried and the command is clear.

The waters rise in one heap a great way off at Adam. Adam means: ‘red’, ‘ruddy’, ‘earth-man’, ‘the formed man’. The current is arrested at the formed-man consciousness, at the human root where spiritual idea first became organised in earth expression.

The name Adam shows that the crossing reaches beyond a recent habit. The inherited stream of human thought is checked at its root pattern. Race Thought Atmosphere loses its unquestioned right to flow through the individual into the body.

The city Adam stands beside Zarethan. Zarethan means: ‘piercing’, ‘penetrating’, ‘cooling’. The Metaphysical Bible Dictionary connects it with an idea finding entrance into consciousness and substance, taking on form and shape. The waters stand near the place where the invisible pierces into manifestation.

This relationship is exact; Jordan is the descending current. Adam is formed humanity. Zarethan is the point of penetration into substance. When the Ark enters the river, the old flow is arrested at the very process through which thought becomes bodily form.

The waters going down toward the Arabah and the Salt Sea are wholly cut off. Arabah means: ‘desert plain’, ‘dry or sterile region’. The Salt Sea represents fixed, unproductive or crystallised consciousness. The descending stream no longer carries the faculties toward sterility and crystallisation.

Salt preserves form but can also indicate a condition where movement has ended. The old current flows toward a deadened basin. Divine Presence interrupts this downward destiny and opens a passage into a fruitful land.

The people pass over directly opposite Jericho. They do not avoid the first stronghold. The crossing brings them face to face with reflected intellectual consciousness. Right against Jericho means the new spiritual government enters the precise region where the old intellectual ruler has fortified itself.

The path through Jordan therefore changes the direction of embodied life. The inherited stream toward fixed and sterile consciousness is cut off. The faculties move across dry ground toward the work of possession.

This is a profound image of ReGeneration. The EVER-LIVING does not remove the body from the current of manifestation. The Presence enters the current, arrests its adverse momentum and opens a lawful way through which the whole person can pass into a new government.

What the Initiate Learns from this Lesson

• That practical faith places its full weight upon the spiritual foundation within the current.

• That the Lord of all the earth claims the Body-Temple for Divine Life.

• That inherited streams of thought can be arrested rather than obeyed as inevitable.

• That the crossing occurs at harvest flood, when accumulated causes have reached full expression.

• To act upon the Law before the outward path appears.

• That the old current can be checked at Adam, the formed-man root of inherited human consciousness.

• That Zarethan marks the penetrating point where idea takes form in substance.

• That Divine Presence cuts off the flow toward sterile and crystallised consciousness and opens the way toward possession.

Let the soles rest in the water.
Let the Ark enter the current.
Let the inherited stream stand still.
Pass over directly toward the first stronghold.

Part Fifteen: All Israel Passes Clean Over

Joshua 3:17

Scripture Text

17 And the priests that bare the ark of the covenant of the EVER-LIVING stood firm on dry ground in the midst of the Jordan; and all Israel passed over on dry ground, until all the nation were passed clean over the Jordan.

Meta-Physical Interpretation

The chapter closes with the priests standing firm in the midst of Jordan. The centre established at the brink has moved into the middle of the current. Faith does not remain at the edge of embodiment. It carries the covenant into the deepest point of transition.

The priests bear the Ark while they stand. Their firmness does not arise from personal resistance to the water. It arises from the Presence they carry and the command they obey. Spiritual stability comes from alignment.

They stand on dry ground. Dry ground within the river reveals a stable foundation where consciousness had expected only moving water. The Divine Order exposes substance beneath the flood of thought. Everything is always in Divine Order and all life is governed by Law.

The water symbolises emotional, subconscious and inherited movement. Dry ground symbolises clear, dependable understanding upon which the faculties can place their feet - understanding faith. The crossing transforms a turbulent boundary into a practical path.

The priests remain in the midst while all Israel passes. The spiritual centre holds its position for the whole process. It does not withdraw after the strongest faculties cross or after the first evidence of success appears.

All Israel signifies the entire gathered consciousness. Israel means: ‘he who strives with God’, ‘a prince with God’, ‘one who prevails with God’. Every faculty formed through the journey must enter embodied possession.

The text then says “all the nation”. A nation is a complete organised people under a common identity and law. The faculties no longer pass as scattered individuals. They cross as one inner nation under the EVER-LIVING.

No tribe is left upon the eastern bank. Reuben, Gad and half-Manasseh cross armed before their brethren as promised. Their early rest becomes service. The receptive households and natural substance remain protected, while the trained faculties participate in the common transition.

The people pass on dry ground. The way given by the Presence becomes walkable by ordinary faculties. The priests open and sustain the path, yet every member must move its own feet across it.

The phrase “clean over” indicates completion. The crossing is not partial, symbolic or merely intended. The nation has passed entirely through the boundary. A ReGenerative stage fulfils itself when the whole relevant field has moved into the new order.

Clean also suggests purification. Jordan is the river of judgment. Passing clean over means meeting the current under the covenant and emerging without remaining governed by it. Judgment becomes passage into Life.

The priests remain until the last faculty crosses. The weakest, slowest or most burdened part of the inner nation receives the same sustained Presence as the first. Divine Order does not abandon the process halfway. The process of ReGeneration accentuates that all is one.

The Ark stands in the midst. The central Presence joins both banks. It holds the old preparatory side and the new land within one covenant. The transition does not divide the individual into rejected past and idealised future. It carries the Wisdom of the journey into possession.

Israel now stands in the Promised Land, yet Jericho remains before them. Entry has occurred; possession continues. The crossing removes the boundary between Truth known and Truth embodied. The next movement will establish memory, consecration and the fall of the first stronghold.

Movement One therefore ends with accomplished passage rather than anticipated victory. The command “Arise” has become “passed clean over”. The Law has moved from Moses into Joshua, from Joshua through the officers, from the officers through the people, from the Ark into Jordan, and from Jordan beneath the feet of the entire nation.

The New World comes through us. The Body-Temple becomes the field where the EVER-LIVING makes the invisible order visible. Crossing Jordan is the moment when the initiate ceases standing outside that responsibility and enters the land with every faculty.

What the Initiate Learns from this Lesson

• That the spiritual centre must stand firm in the midst of transition.

• That stability arises from the Presence carried and the command obeyed.

• That dry ground represents practical spiritual understanding exposed beneath the flood of mortal thought.

• That the whole inner nation must cross, including the faculties that already possess partial rest.

• That every faculty must move its own feet across the path opened by the Presence.

• That clean passage means complete movement through judgment into a new order.

• That the Presence remains until the last part of consciousness has crossed.

• That entry completes one stage while preparing the next work of possession.

The priests stand firm.
The Ark remains in the midst.
All Israel crosses on dry ground.
The whole nation passes clean over.

MOVEMENT ONE SYNTHESIS

FROM ARISE TO CLEAN OVER

Movement One begins with the completion of Moses’ visible office and ends with all Israel standing inside the Promised Land. Between these two points, the whole structure of embodiment is established.

Moses carries understanding to the threshold. Joshua carries that understanding into action. The transition preserves continuity because the same EVER-LIVING works through both faculties. The Law does not disappear when instruction ends. It becomes the Word in Joshua’s mouth, the meditation of day and night, the command through the officers and the direction of the feet.

Joshua represents the saving and executive I AM, yet Joshua never becomes a separate hero. His name declares that Jehovah is salvation and victory. His strength rests upon the Presence. His courage rests upon the command. His success rests upon observance of the Law. His authority becomes visible through service to the whole inner nation.

The Promised Land is the Body-Temple. The borders of Joshua’s commission include wilderness, purity, fruitfulness, fear-bound territory and the far reach of sense consciousness. The whole embodied field belongs to the EVER-LIVING. Every place upon which the sole treads must come under Divine government.

The eastern tribes reveal that partial attainment cannot become private rest. Reuben’s sight, Gad’s organised power and Manasseh’s release from the old identity must cross before their brethren and help until the whole consciousness receives rest. Unity transforms privilege into service.

Jericho is examined before it is confronted. Observation and discernment enter quietly. They discover that the old city possesses walls and a king, yet also contains Rahab, natural love capable of breadth, liberty and faith. The old structure already contains a doorway into its own transformation.

Rahab protects the messengers beneath flax laid in order. She hears of the Red Sea, Sihon and Og, then interprets those events through the EVER-LIVING. Hearing becomes knowing. Natural love ceases serving many masters and centres itself upon the one God in heaven above and earth beneath.

The covenant with Rahab joins kindness and truth. The window becomes perception, the cord becomes connection, and the scarlet line becomes the visible sign of embodied Life joined to the promise. Rahab’s house in the wall becomes a bridge between the old city and the advancing spiritual nation.

The spies return with the right report. They do not deny Jericho’s structure, yet they recognise its inward melting. Their speech agrees with the promise. The old error of the twelve spies is corrected before the new generation crosses.

Israel then comes to Jordan. The people wait, see the Ark and follow a way never travelled. Sacred space preserves clear direction. Sanctification gathers the faculties under one motive. The priests bear the Presence and place their feet in the overflowing current.

Jordan is full at harvest. The accumulated consequences of human thought have matured. Yet the current is arrested at Adam beside Zarethan, at formed humanity near the point where ideas penetrate substance and take form. The old inherited flow toward the dry Arabah and fixed Salt Sea is wholly cut off.

The crossing therefore reaches the root of embodiment. Divine Presence enters the stream through which thought becomes body and consequence. Faith stands still within the movement, and a stable path appears beneath the flood.

All Israel crosses. The whole nation passes clean over. No faculty remains behind, no early possession becomes an excuse, and no part is abandoned in the river. The Presence stands in the midst until the work is complete.

Movement One teaches that possession begins before battle. It begins when the Law becomes inward government, the faculties accept one centre, speech gives the right report, love enters covenant, the Presence enters the current and every part of consciousness crosses into embodied responsibility.

The initiate has not yet taken Jericho. The first stronghold still stands. Yet Israel now occupies the correct side of the river. The distance between knowing and living has been crossed. Movement Two can now establish memorial, renew covenant in the flesh, celebrate Passover in the land and bring the walls of reflected intellect down through ordered obedience.

The command of Movement One remains complete and practical: Arise. Be strong and courageous. Keep the Law in the mouth. Prepare provision. Help the whole inner nation. Examine the stronghold. Recognise faith within the wall. Bind Life to the covenant. Follow the Ark. Sanctify the faculties. Place the feet in the water. Stand firm. Pass clean over.

WHAT THE INITIATE LEARNS FROM MOVEMENT ONE

• That Maturity leads to Possession. Understanding fulfils itself through embodied action.

• That Joshua is the saving and executive I AM through which the EVER-LIVING applies Divine Law throughout the Body-Temple.

• That the Law must unite speech, meditation, motive and conduct.

• That the whole Body-Temple belongs to the EVER-LIVING and every region must receive conscious government.

• That partial rest creates responsibility for the whole consciousness.

• That spiritual reconnaissance identifies both the ruling error and the receptive capacity within an old structure.

That natural love can become faith, covenant and a living bridge between the unseen promise and the seen world.

• That the right report interprets evidence through Divine action rather than inherited fear.

• To follow the realised Presence into paths that memory alone cannot govern.

• That sanctification prepares the faculties for Divine action.

• That faith places its feet in the current before outward evidence changes.

• That inherited thought can be arrested at the point where it enters embodiment.

• That judgment becomes a path into Life when the Ark stands in its midst.

• That the Presence remains until the whole nation has passed clean over.

• That entry into the Body-Temple begins the practical work of possession.

Moses has brought the soul to the river.
Joshua has arisen.
Rahab has opened the window.
The Ark has entered Jordan.
All Israel has passed clean over.
The Body-Temple now lies before the initiate.
